Work Schedule

The treatment plants are operated 24/7. This position will be assigned a rotating shift schedule consisting of 2-11.7 hour days followed by 2-11.7 hour nights and 4 days off. Additional $1.00/hour shift pay. Applicants must be available to work any assigned schedule.

Job Summary

Operator responsibilities include operating, monitoring and maintaining wastewater treatment and odor control equipment, systems and processes in a wastewater (primary and secondary) treatment facility and/or collection and conveyance system. Must be available to work any assigned schedule (including rotating shifts). This position is overtime eligible.

The primary responsibilities of the Sr. Operator position include serving in a lead capacity in a work group responsible for operating and monitoring wastewater treatment and odor control equipment, systems and processes in a wastewater treatment facility and/or collection system and conveyance system. Responsibilities include coordinating, training and providing technical expertise to other wastewater treatment operations staff and coordinating on-site responses to unusual occurrences and emergencies.

Job Duties
  • Knowledge of wastewater treatment processes, including preliminary, primary, secondary, digestion, gas handling systems, sludge handling and plant-wide air, water, electrical and hydraulic support systems.
  • Knowledge of collection systems, including pumps stations, regulator stations and miscellaneous structures, and of disinfecting methods.
  • Knowledge and skill of wastewater treatment processes (OIT and Operator levels).
  • Serve in a lead capacity to operate, monitor and maintain wastewater treatment and odor control equipment and biological, chemical, mechanical and hydraulic processes.
  • Provide expert troubleshooting, problem‑solving and decision‑making when performing duties particularly in on‑site unusual and/or emergency situations. Be on call after hours for such situations.
  • Conduct sampling and test analysis of wastewater and recommend and/or decide on changes to process to meet federal and Washington State permits and regulations and to optimize plant performance.
  • Provide broad, in‑depth on‑the‑job training to other wastewater operations staff.
  • Plan, schedule, coordinate and perform maintenance on wastewater facilities.
  • Communicate with the general public, construction personnel, consultants and engineers to resolve complaints and serve as technical resource.
  • Plan, schedule and coordinate activities with process control, maintenance, facilities services, off‑site facilities services and other crews to exchange information on wastewater operations, maintenance and processes.
  • Coordinate and perform on‑site response to unusual occurrences and emergencies.
  • With complex computer systems, operate, monitor and control wastewater equipment and systems.
  • Assume operational responsibilities for rotating shifts and other operations in the absence of the Wastewater Treatment Supervisor.
  • Perform the duties of the Wastewater Treatment Utility Worker and Operator as needed.
  • Be available to work all shifts, including days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays. May be required to be on standby and/or call out status and/or subject to after‑hours call in.

  • Knowledge and skills of the Wastewater Treatment Utility Worker and Operator, and:
  • Knowledge of the description, function & major components for plant‑wide gas, chlorination, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, odor control, electrical, water, air & hydraulic systems.
