Lead Electrical Engineer (Renewables) – Billings, MT
WSP is currently initiating a search for a Lead Electrical Engineer (Renewables) to join our Power & Energy team in Billings, MT. In this role, you will support technical staff, engineers, and project managers in due diligence, investigation, remediation, impact assessment, permitting, design, development, and construction of utility, industrial, and commercial scale projects across the public and private sectors. Tasks may include research, design, concept development, and construction of transmission and distribution substations, power distribution, power regulation, renewable energy, protection and control systems in a variety of contexts (utilities, transportation, building, and federal, state, and local government projects).
You will generate accurate and concise reports and documentation, ensuring quality that meets or exceeds acceptable industry standards for design, safety, and functionality.
- Assist Project Managers in bid evaluation and project planning.
- Lead design team from conceptual phase through completion and act as Engineer‑of‑Record for large complex substation and gen‑tie projects.
- Participate in preparing technical proposals including scope, schedule, and budget.
- Serve as a technical liaison with clients, contractors, and vendors.
- Provide engineering support during construction, including field inspections and witness tests.
- Provide training and mentorship to junior and intermediate engineers.
- Grow and manage relationships with alliance clients.
- Mentor less experienced staff in substation project execution.
- Lead technical specifications development for large EPC projects, including scope, schedule, and estimates.
- Perform and direct others in detailed design of medium to extra‑high voltage utility substations, including one‑line diagrams, elementary and wiring diagrams, SCADA, communications, conduit and cable sizing/routing, substation physical layouts, selection of substation equipment, writing equipment specifications, proposal development, construction cost estimates, and project scheduling.
- Ensure POWER quality procedures are followed and the team is resourced optimally.
- Perform QA/QC for deliverables to clients across multiple offices.
- Manage schedule, budget, and quality of assigned projects.
- BS in Electrical Engineering, Renewable Energy Engineering, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related accredited degree with a power option.
- Professional Engineering license (PE) or eligibility to obtain a PE.
- Experience in substation design at 15kV through 500kV and familiarity with IEEE/ANSI standards.
- Experience managing 3–5 people on a project team.
- Experience serving as a project engineer for several concurrent projects.
- Strong command of the English language with effective written and oral communication skills.
- Legal authorization to work permanently in the U.S. without sponsorship.
- Seven (7) or more years of substation design experience.

CompensationExpected Salary (all locations): $103,500 – $176,000. WSP USA reserves the right to pay more or less than this range and to offer additional benefits and compensation as appropriate.
