Job Overview
Legrand has an exciting opportunity for a Testing and Development Engineer to join the Data, Power and Control Division in Independence, OH. The Testing & Development Engineer will work closely with the optics engineering team to develop, test, and validate our transceiver product lines. Responsibilities include EEPROM coding, programming, and testing optical transceivers across various network equipment. The role involves interoperability testing, OEM compatibility development, and hands‑on work with switches, routers, and NICs.
Familiarity with industry standards such as MSA, SFF, and CMIS are essential.
- Develop and implement EEPROM programming solutions for optical transceivers, ensuring reliable device performance and compatibility
- Maintain and calibrate lab equipment, including network switches, routers, and test instruments, to support ongoing testing and development activities
- Perform product qualification testing, verifying compliance with technical specifications, industry standards, and performance requirements
- Conduct interoperability testing across a broad range of OEM platforms to ensure seamless integration and functionality
- Apply expertise in MSA standards and protocols (e.g., SFF, CMIS, OIF, IEEE, MEF) to design, test, and troubleshoot transceiver solutions
- Diagnose and resolve switch software and EEPROM-related issues, ensuring minimal downtime and operational efficiency
- Provide technical support to customer technicians, assisting with testing, deployment, and troubleshooting of optical solutions
- Collaborate cross‑functionally with internal engineering teams and contract manufacturers to address and resolve technical challenges
- Lead lab operations and support QC initiatives, including complex device configurations and testing workflows
- Accurately document test procedures, configurations, and results to maintain comprehensive records for internal and customer use
- Manage multiple concurrent projects in a fast‑paced, collaborative environment while meeting deadlines and quality standards
- Support a diverse product portfolio, including optical transceivers, DACs, AOCs, ACCs, and AECs
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or related field or equivalent professional experience
- 3+ years Engineering or R&D technical support experience in information industry, data center/ telecommunications industry, and networking equipment connectivity experience
- 3+ years of hands‑on experience as Layer 1/2 network technician or similar preferred
- Strong understanding of Layer 1/2 networking and TCP/IP protocols
- Experience with network test equipment (e.g., Viavi, Veex, Multilane, EXFO, etc.)
- Basic CLI proficiency across various switch platforms
- Proficiency in EEPROM programming and compatibility across NEMs
- Familiarity with I2C, CMIS, SFF, Ethernet, and Infini Band protocols
- Knowledge of hexadecimal and encryption is a plus
- Excellent problem‑solving and communication skills
- Proficiency in MS Office and Visio
- Experience with various network architectures supporting data centers and service providers
- CONA or CONE certification is a plus
- Ability to perform in a fast‑paced dynamic environment
Up to 25% travel; willingness to travel for trade shows, customer visits, or other company facilities. At times there could be short‑notice travel to support customers.
