Principal / Division Leader PositionCTL Engineering, Inc. () is an award‑winning, full‑service consulting engineering firm with 15 locations across OH, IN, WV, KY, NC, SC, and VA and a rich history of 98 years in business. We provide civil/site design and land surveying, environmental, geotechnical, construction administration & inspection, accident reconstruction, roofing/building envelope, A/V system design, troubleshooting & installation, transportation design (bridge/roadway), and specialized testing services to the construction industry.
We are looking for a Principal / Division Leader who will play a key role in all aspects of environmental‑related projects—permitting, wetland delineation & remediation, stormwater management, brownfield investigation & remediation, hydrogeologic studies, etc.—for state, county, and local clients. You’ll lead a team, manage projects, and collaborate closely with a wide array of clients.
Highlights- This position will report directly to the COO and will work independently on a broad range of projects while managing a team of direct reports.
- The current team size is 14 employees, with future growth anticipated in the near term.
- Projects are typically in Ohio and northern Kentucky, with anticipated growth in Indiana, West Virginia, North & South Carolina, and Virginia.
- Travel within these regions is expected.
- Must be willing and able to manage personnel and services in multiple offices across multiple states.
- Set overarching goals for the Environmental Service Line and all team members.
- Partner with other departments to anticipate future needs and develop action plans for solutions.
- Manage teams and provide leadership on vision, goals, and performance accountability.
- Lead training, development, and supervision of Technicians, Project Managers, and Engineers in the Environmental division.
- Refine, update, and execute processes the team will follow on projects.
- Conduct project management and staff oversight for environmental, AML, and water/wastewater projects.
- Participate in business development and contract negotiations.
- Define scope of work, prepare proposals, and manage projects.
- Coordinate client contact, develop and retain professional relationships, identify prospects, qualify prospects, and make recommendations on projects to pursue.
- Manage budgeting and project profitability, including reviewing budgets, identifying concerns, coordinating supplemental requests, and preparing staffing requirements.
- Review operational KPIs and report revenue vs. budget to the C‑Suite on a monthly basis.
- Hire and retain professional Engineers, Technicians, and office professionals, in consultation with the COO/CEO.
- Other duties may include working closely with the CGO, Dean Hatfield, and other regional principals to develop annual projections and share resources.
- Knowledge of civil/environmental engineering principles.
- Technical experience in consulting and/or regulatory environments for ecological, remediation design, permit, and grant writing projects.
- Experience with standard testing and observation methods.
- Ability to read project plans and construction documents.
- Understanding of construction or engineering services.
- Experience in performing quality control initiatives and performance testing.
- Prior experience in lab reporting, writing reports, and maintaining records.
- Current experience in oversight/managing lab reporting and record keeping.
- Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to provide status updates independently.
- Be quality‑mindful and client‑focused.
- Targeting 20+ years of experience with environmental‑related projects.
- Bachelor’s degree (preferably a Master’s or PhD) in Environmental Engineering or related sciences.
- Professional Engineer (PE), Certified Professional (CP), Certified Professional Geologist (CPG), and/or Professional Wetland Scientist (PWS) certification(s)…
