The R&D Chemist/Scientist is responsible for providing support functions related to current products, and the development of new or improved products within the company. This individual works closely with the Senior Manager of Product Engineering, Product Development Chemists, and Product Development Engineers to perform chemical and mechanical analysis testing for existing products, and new or improved products’ feasibility, product verification, validation and manufacturing processes.

Furthermore, the R&D Chemist/Scientist is responsible for maintaining the R&D Laboratory equipment and inventory.

Essential Functions
  • Perform chemical analysis testing that may include Gas Chromatography (GC), High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Fourier-Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), microscopy, pH meter, and Karl Fischer Moisture Analyzer.
  • Perform mechanical/functional analysis testing on aerosol products.
  • Collect/analyze data, interpret results, draw conclusions, and generate final reports. Maintaining a laboratory notebook.
  • Perform test procedures according to either qualified or validated testing protocols.
  • Maintain laboratory inventories and organization.
  • Maintain preventative maintenance schedules for laboratory equipment.
  • Develop and update test methods for analysis of new and existing products. This includes designing instrumentation, writing Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s) and transferring methodology.
  • Generate and document all activities to the level necessary to comply with Current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP), Current Good Laboratory Practices (cGLP), and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) requirements.
  • Design and execute studies for new and improved products, packaging, product analytical testing, and manufacturing processes; and generate documents required under Design Controls.
  • Create, maintain and manage agreed upon timelines for new product development projects and improvements or revisions to existing product development projects.
  • Interact with the Engineering Department, Regulatory Affairs Department, and the Quality Assurance Department to determine and to develop the requirements for new and improved products, packaging, analytical testing and manufacturing processes.
  • Utilize recognized industry standards and statistical methods and approaches to qualify new products.
Other Duties and Responsibilities
  • Initiates and Maintains Engineering Change Requests (ECRs)
  • Performs In-Process Analysis Checks of Production Units including formula composition by weight.
  • Participates in training or workshop sessions.
  • Calibrates, sets up, and repairs equipment.
  • Shows strong ability for problem-solving techniques on projects or chemical analysis testing.
  • Recommends purchase of new equipment, aids the manager in budget planning.
  • Communicates and presents technical information to critical members within and outside the organization.
  • Within a team, exhibits objectivity and openness to others' views while giving and welcoming feedback.
  • Writes clearly and concisely.
Qualifications Education

BS in Chemistry/Biology or Engineering Discipline required.

Background/Training/Skills/Experience
  • 2+ years of prior corporate lab experience
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to develop analytical test methods in support of design transfer.
  • Highly organized, accurate and detail oriented.

    Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Technically proficient in Microsoft Office Products and personal computer skills.
  • Familiarity with aerosol gas handling, aerosol filling, blending, transferring, delivery and the packaging and labeling equipment required for medical devices preferred.
  • Working knowledge of product compatibility testing methods for aerosols preferred.
  • Proficient in industry standards and statistical analysis methods and techniques.
