Job Summary

This position is responsible for performing general and paraprofessional patron assistance, programming support, circulation, research, collection, outreach, and group service duties at one or more assigned branches or floors at the Main Library. Public Services Associates will have a primary branch or Main/LSW assignment and will be designated as either: PSA West, PSA East, or PSA Main/LSW.

Qualifications

Education:

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

  • Three to five years’ experience working with the public.
  • Three years of experience working with personal computers, online tools, resources, databases, and group meeting platforms.
  • Intermediate proficiency (70% passing) in MS Office or similar software and customer service.
  • Three years’ experience coordinating adult or children’s programming strongly preferred.
  • Completed coursework in a subject specialty of the department or equivalent career experience preferred (Main Library Subject Departments).
  • Library experience and experience working in a diverse, densely populated community considered to be a major metropolitan area preferred.
Technical Expertise
  • Intermediate level knowledge of library practices, terminology, classification systems, and technology.
  • Computer skills including use of Windows, MS Office, internet browsing, group meeting platforms, library‑related databases, systems, and software.
  • General principles and objectives of information technology systems and programs.
  • Maintain knowledge and skills of various current adaptive and emerging technology to support patron, personal, and business needs.
  • Intermediate level mathematics and English skills.
  • Reading, understanding, and communicating information and ideas presented in writing.
  • Experience working with all levels within an organization required.
  • Proper spelling, grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure to ensure written materials are complete, succinct, and error‑free.
  • Knowledge of the subject area and terminology of the subject department (Main Library Subject Departments).
  • Working knowledge of a foreign language as specified in the position vacancy.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop and coordinate planning and programming under the direction of the Department or Branch Manager or Librarian.
  • Coordinate and participate in community outreach activities and events.
  • Perform patron assistance duties including research, circulation, outreach, collection, reader’s advisory, and group service duties at one or more assigned branches or floors at Downtown locations.
  • Assist patrons of all ages with materials, technology, services, programs, and facilitate connections with community partners.
  • Assist patrons with informational, meeting participation, and research requests. Demonstrate and assist patrons with print and online reference tools. Communicate with and resolve routine patron issues.
  • Assist patrons with library computers and library‑supported software. Coordinate, schedule, instruct, train, and oversee patron use of technology equipment.
  • Perform direct patron and material circulation functions and effectively respond to complex inquiries.
  • Facilitate and conduct tours, visits, and prepare promotional and/or informational materials.
  • Ensure patrons feel welcomed, supported, safe, and engaged while visiting and/or utilizing library services and programs.
  • Support staff members, in particular substitutes, pages, and volunteers.
