Job Summary
In this customer support role, the Student Financial Services Counselor provides counseling, advice, and assistance by phone, email, and chat to students regarding billing and payments. The counselor coordinates with student registration, the registrar's office, financial aid, graduate school, Clemson Home, and other relevant areas, serving as the primary customer service contact. The role includes collecting outstanding receivables to reduce debt owed to the University and performing other assigned duties.
Job Duties- Collections, Payment Processing, and Reporting (35%)
Performs student receivables accounting functions, processes in-person or mailed payments with high accuracy, adheres to policy, collects past‑due amounts for enrolled and non‑enrolled accounts, and develops reports to track collections trends and metrics. - Communications and Customer Service (40%)
Manages all customer communications via email, phone, chat, in‑person visits, recorded messages, and mail. Schedules virtual meetings, participates in orientations, demonstrates excellent customer service, and reviews departmental web pages for content accuracy. - Report Interpretation and Distribution (10%)
Stays current on IRS 1098‑T reporting requirements, assists with distribution of annual 1098‑T statements, interprets tax document information for students and parents, and trains new staff on billing and reporting. - Departmental Support (10%)
Uses the university’s online procurement system to process vouchers, order supplies, handle inventory, reconcile reports and invoices, and provides assistance to management as needed. - Other Duties as Assigned (5%)
Makes recommendations for process improvement, reviews business processes in Customer Service, Banking, and Collections, and completes miscellaneous responsibilities as necessary.
- High School diploma or equivalent.
- Professional experience in accounting, auditing, finance, or commercial lending.
- Minimum of 1 year of relevant work experience.
- At least 3 years of relevant experience.
- Customer service experience in higher education or in accounting/finance.
- Demonstrate firm job knowledge and apply it in varied situations.
- Act as a lead by guiding similarly situated colleagues.
- No budgetary responsibilities.

Compensation InformationExpected Salary Range: $45,300.00 per year. Salary is dependent upon experience, knowledge, skills, and performance.
