Student Financial Services Counselor
Location: Clemson, SC
Job SummaryIn this customer support role, the Student Financial Services Counselor counsel, advises, and helps students and parents by phone, email, and chat regarding student billing and payments, including coordination with the student registration, registrar’s office, financial aid, graduate school, Clemson Home, and other applicable areas. The role serves as the primary customer service contact, collects outstanding receivables to reduce debt owed to the University, and performs other duties as assigned.
Job Duties- Collections, Payment Processing, and Reporting (35%) – Performs student receivables accounting functions, processes in‑person or mailed payments with a high degree of accuracy, collects past‑due amounts for enrolled and non‑enrolled accounts, calls and emails students, works with other departments to resolve past‑due accounts, and develops reports to show trends and metrics for management.
- Communications and Customer Service (40%) – Manages communications with all customers via email, phone, chat, in‑person visits, recorded voicemail, and mailed correspondence; schedules virtual meetings with counselors and managers; participates in virtual/in‑person orientations; maintains excellent internal and external customer service; reviews department web pages and office communication for accuracy and reports improvements.
- Report Interpretation and Distribution (10%) – Remains knowledgeable about IRS 1098‑T reporting requirements; assists in the distribution of annual 1098‑T statements; accurately interprets and advises students and parents about the tax document while adhering to FERPA rules; trains new staff on university billing and reporting requirements.
- Departmental Support (10%) – Utilizes the University’s online procurement system to process vouchers, order supplies, handle inventory, reconcile reports and accounts, and pay invoices while adhering to policy and procedure; provides assistance to management as needed.
- Other Duties as Assigned (5%) – Remains knowledgeable about departmental policies, provides improvement recommendations, reviews business processes, and completes miscellaneous duties as needed.
- Education – High School or equivalent and professional experience in a related area such as accounting, auditing, finance, or commercial lending.
- Work Experience – 1+ year in a related field.
- Work Experience – 3+ years in a related field.
- Customer service experience, higher education experience, or accounting/finance experience.
- Job Knowledge – Firm working knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures and ability to use them in varied situations.
- Supervisory Responsibilities – Acts as a Lead by guiding the work of others who perform essentially the same work.
- Budgetary Responsibilities – No fiscal responsibility for the department’s budget.

Expected Salary Range: $45,300.00 – salary is dependent on experience, knowledge, skills, and performance.
