BRIEF DESCRIPTION
The Accounting Technician performs daily cashiering and accounts payable functions and provides customer support related to finance help desk inquiries. This position processes invoices, payments, employee travel and reimbursement requests, and banking transactions; maintains vendor records; assists with monthly accounting close activities; and supports general accounting operations, including journal entries, transaction coding, report generation, and special projects. The position researches and resolves cashiering and accounts payable issues and provides administrative and technical support to the Finance Department under the direction of the Assistant Finance Director.
NECESSARYKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of basic accounting principles and practices related to accounts payable, accounts receivable, cashiering, and general ledger functions.
- Knowledge of standard office and financial recordkeeping procedures, including filing, documentation, and data entry requirements.
- Knowledge of basic internal controls and cash-handling procedures.
- Knowledge of accounting software or ERP systems used for routine financial transactions and reporting.
- Skill in performing routine accounts payable processing, including invoice review, data entry, and payment preparation.
- Skill in cashiering functions, cash handling, and assisting with cash audits and reconciliations.
- Skill in entering and maintaining accurate financial records and vendor information.
- Skill in using computers, spreadsheets, and accounting software to process transactions and generate basic reports.
- Skill in preparing clear, accurate written correspondence and maintaining organized records.
- Ability to learn and apply accounting policies, procedures, and applicable regulations.
- Ability to perform detailed work with accuracy and attention to detail.
- Ability to identify routine discrepancies and refer complex issues to appropriate staff.
- Ability to communicate effectively and provide customer service to internal departments, vendors, and the public.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks, meet deadlines, and work effectively with interruptions.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment when handling financial information.
- Ability to work independently while following established procedures and supervision.
- Ability to serve as backup support for other staff and perform other related duties as assigned.
- Working knowledge of bookkeeping theories and practices.
- Computer proficient in Microsoft Office applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, etc.), as well as the ability learn accounting software
Associate’s degree in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field and one (1) year of accounting or financial experience; OR
High school diploma or equivalent and at least three (3) to five (5) years of progressively responsible experience in accounting, accounts payable/receivable, or financial recordkeeping experience; OR
Any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIREDA valid Class C Texas driver's license and the ability to maintain a satisfactory driving record
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS AND SAFETY HAZARDSPrimarily in an indoor environment with the ability to operate outdoors when needed. May be exposed to extreme heat and cold during the summer and winter months.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USEDStandard office equipment, including multi-line telephone, computer, fax machine, copier, scanner, printer, calculator, etc.
