Associate Attorney Qualifications (for a business litigation practice that includes construction, contract, and real property litigation):
- Strong work ethic: This person has to be willing to work until everything that needs to be done has been done. This is not a 9-5, Monday through Friday job. That doesn’t mean it is a 70-hour workweek, but it’s definitely more than 40 hours.
- Self-starter: This person has to be motivated to take on tasks that need to be done, not just wait to be told to do particular tasks.
- Smart: Book knowledge and common sense.
- Willing to learn: Teachable and not afraid to ask questions. No matter how smart a person is, or how much they already know, they’ve still got to learn.
- Critical thinker: Can analyze facts and research and apply the law to the facts to figure out how to move a case forward.
- Integrity: How you deal with judges, opposing counsel, opposing parties, witnesses – everyone.
