Job Description:

The firm (a business litigation practice that includes construction, contract, and real property litigation) is looking to hire an associate attorney. Here are the qualifications we’re looking for:

• The candidate will work in a firm that handles business litigation, including construction, contract, and real property matters, with an expectation of contributing to case preparation, research, and strategy.

• Strong work ethic. This person has to be willing to work until everything that needs to be done has been done. This is not a 9-5, Monday through Friday job. That doesn’t mean it is a 70-hour workweek, but it’s definitely more than 40 hours.
• Self-starter. This person has to be self-motivated to take on tasks that need to be done, not just wait to be told to do particular tasks.
• Smart (book knowledge and common sense). It’s amazing how many people there are practicing law who don’t seem to know what they’re doing.
• Willing to learn, teachable, and not afraid to ask questions. No matter how smart a person is, or how much they already know, they’ve still got to learn.
• Critical thinker. Some people are book smart, but can’t think critically, so their smartness is useless. We need someone who can analyze facts and research and apply the law to the facts to figure out how to move a case forward successfully, whether as plaintiff or defendant.
• Don’t be a jerk. (Unfortunately, some lawyers confuse being zealous for a client with being difficult.) We can be firm in our positions with opposing counsel but not be a jerk in the process.
• Integrity. How a person deals with judges, opposing counsel, opposing parties, witnesses – everyone.
• There is no age range limit, although I’m not looking for someone in their 60’s because I’m looking at ultimately retiring and handing the firm over to this person to continue after I’m completely out of the picture. My present plan is to stay pretty active for the next 5 years, and then slow down after 70, but not sure when I totally walk away.
• Willing to consider someone with little experience who has passed the Florida Bar exam, but prefer someone who has had some experience practicing law in Florida, and preferably in civil litigation.
• Salary range is negotiable, to possibly include a portion of the net income generated by the attorney. The firm pays for health insurance.
