Marcurius is seeking a hands-on Chief Marine Engineer to serve as the senior technical authority for marine systems across our USV platforms.
This role owns marine systems architecture and execution
, including propulsion and machinery integration oversight, system layout, interfaces, and technical decision-making from build through testing, sea trials, and operational iteration.
As a Chief-level Engineer
, you will lead by example while building and guiding the Engineering Team
, setting technical standards, and ensuring marine systems are robust, serviceable, and mission-ready in a fast-moving startup environment.
Candidates must be eligible to obtain and maintain US Security clearance (if not currently held).
Key Responsibilities Technical & Team Leadership- Lead the Marcurius Engineering Team and associated subsystems specialists
- Act as the Technical Authority for all sub-systems design and integration
- Set engineering standards, design practices, and integration approaches
- Provide technical direction, mentorship, and guidance to Engineers
- Demonstrate strong leadership, communication, and collaboration within a diverse, multi-national team
- Serve as the primary engineering liaison with the Naval Architect during build and integration phases
- Collaborate on mass properties, center of gravity, and stability considerations related to installed systems and modular payloads
- Oversee propulsion integration from preliminary design through sea trials
- Evaluate and integrate propulsion solutions including outboard, inboard and PWC-derived propulsion systems
- Lead machinery layout, 3D packaging, and interface definition across hull, propulsion, sensors, payloads, and electrical systems using CAD tools
- Define and manage mechanical and structural interfaces supporting autonomy, sensors, communications, and mission payload integration
- Design and integrate platform survivability features, including environmental protection, thermal management, shock isolation, and vibration mitigation
- Iterate platforms with modularity, scalability, maintainability, and field repair in mind
- Own lifecycle considerations for USV platforms, including upgrades, refits, and continuous improvement of fielded systems
- Work directly with suppliers, fabricators, and shipyards to develop and integrate custom components and subsystems
- Support transition from prototype to production in coordination with manufacturing and supply chain teams
- Define and execute dock testing, sea trials, and post-test analysis for hull, propulsion, and mechanical systems
- Develop test plans, acceptance criteria, and platform readiness reviews
- Lead root cause analysis and corrective actions for systems failures observed during testing or operations
- Document design decisions, trade studies, and lessons learned to support iteration and future platform variants
- Act as the Principle Authority in developing documenting and producing maintenance schedules and before & after use routines
- Interface with customers, partners, and regulators on platform readiness, performance, and compliance
- 10+ years of experience in marine engineering or mechanical engineering with a strong focus on small craft or USVs
- Hands-on experience designing, building, and supporting high-performance marine platforms, including composite and/or aluminum structures
- Strong understanding of marine systems, propulsion and electrical systems integration, structural design, and machinery layout
- Proven ability to take marine platforms from concept through fabrication, integration, testing, and sea trials
- Practical experience troubleshooting and resolving propulsion, electrical, structural, or integration issues in real-world environments
- Experience owning or stewarding marine platforms beyond initial design, including upgrades, refits, and operational improvements
- Comfortable operating as the Senior Marine Engineering Authority within a small, fast-moving engineering team
- Strong technical communication skills, including design rationale, trade studies, and test documentation
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or equivalent experience
