The Traffic Electronics Technician performs highly skilled, hands‑on technical work supporting the reliability and performance of the County’s traffic signal and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS). This role leads the testing, troubleshooting, programming, configuration, repair, and evaluation of advanced traffic control equipment—both in a controlled shop environment and in the field.

Serving as the Pinellas County’s primary technical authority for traffic signal electronics and emerging transportation technologies prior to field deployment, this position plays a critical role in ensuring equipment is fully validated, compliant, and ready for live operations. The work demands strong independent judgment, advanced technical expertise, and a high level of accountability, as systems approved in this role directly control traffic flow and have a direct impact on public safety and mobility throughout the community.

What

Would You Do?
  • Performs advanced troubleshooting, testing, repair, modification, and programming of traffic signal controllers, malfunction management units (MMUs), vehicle and pedestrian detection equipment, communications devices, and related electronic and electromechanical components, down to the component, software or firmware level.
  • Conducts required testing and certification of traffic signal components, including MMUs, and maintains accurate test records in accordance with state and local requirements.
  • Programs and configures traffic signal controllers and cabinet equipment for new intersections, intersection modifications, and technology upgrades; installs and tests equipment in test cabinets to verify safe and proper operation prior to field deployment.
  • Serves as the primary technical resource for field technicians by providing advanced remote and infield troubleshooting assistance for complex, time critical signal and ITS malfunctions.
  • Researches, evaluates, and tests new and emerging traffic and ITS technologies; coordinates with vendors on pilot projects, product demonstrations, firmware updates, and compatibility testing.
  • Develops and maintains standard operating procedures (SOPs), configuration standards, and technical documentation for traffic signal and ITS equipment.
  • Develops training materials, manuals, and curriculum for Traffic Maintenance Field Technicians; conducts classroom and hands on training sessions and evaluates technical competency.
  • Supports technician career development by assisting with skills assessments, competency testing, and technical evaluations related to advancement within the traffic maintenance career ladder.
  • Acts as the primary point of contact for vendors regarding equipment repairs, warranty claims, RMAs, and firmware or hardware issues; tracks equipment status and maintains accurate records.
  • Assists management in establishing equipment standards, preferred products, and specifications; provides technical recommendations related to system capabilities, limitations, and risk.
  • Coordinates with supervisors, Traffic Management Center staff, engineers, contractors, and other stakeholders to support system upgrades, pilot deployments, and operational needs.
  • Maintains accurate records, logs, and reports related to testing, programming, repairs, training activities, and vendor coordination.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
What Do You Need To Have?
  • Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED and five (5) years of experience installing, maintaining, and repairing traffic signal systems and related components, plus one (1) year of leadership or supervisory experience or training; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience.
  • Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Florida Driver's License.
  • Assignment to work a variety of work schedules including compulsory work periods in special, emergency, and/or disaster situations.
