** The starting salary for this position ranges from $20.26 to $22.29 per hour, depending upon experience (DOE).**
Performs a variety of skilled duties related to the City’s Meter Replacement Project, including installation, maintenance, and repair of meters, meter parts, meter water connections, and meter boxes as required by the project scope.
Note:
This is a temporary position related to the City’s comprehensive meter replacement project. The project is estimated to take two to four years, depending on the complexity of the work.
Works under the general supervision of the Utility Superintendent.

Examples of Duties- Residential Water Meter Replacement
- Replace existing meter transiting systems with new transmission systems in all residential boxes throughout the city.
- Replace entire meter assemblies when needed.
- Assess meters, meter components, meter boxes, and all service lines to evaluate the overall condition for replacement and eliminate any potential water quality concerns.
- Operate a variety of hand tools and small power equipment such as jack hammers, compressors, packing machines, threading machines, tapping machines and tampers; clean tools and equipment to assure proper working order.
- Operate valves for isolating segments of the system.
- Complete daily tracking of completed services.
- Commercial Water Meter Replacement
- Replace existing meter transiting systems with new transmission systems in all commercial boxes throughout the city, including the Freeport Center.
- Operate backhoe and trenching equipment to perform installation or repair of water service connections, water lines, and new meters.
- Participate in work zone safety procedures relating to confined space, trench shoring, toxic gases in high concentration, low oxygen environment, explosive chemicals, acids and carcinogens, electrical, heights in excess of twenty (20) feet, and biological hazards.
- Complete daily tracking of completed services.

Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma/GED
- One (1) year of experience in construction, maintenance or repair of water distribution systems
- OR an equivalent combination of education and experience
- Must be a certified flagger or able to become one.
- Must possess a valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) or obtain one within 6 months of hire.
- Backflow Program Administrator Certification
- III or IV Water Distribution System Operator Certification
Essential Functions, Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Some knowledge of operating basic manual and power tools; the standard practices, methods, materials, and tools necessary for pipeline construction and repair activities; pipe fitting procedures; the occupational hazards and safety precautions of trench work construction and pipeline maintenance work; hazards common to heavy equipment operation; safety standards related to street construction and maintenance; material and methods of constructing roads, drain systems, etc.;
interpersonal communication skills. - Ability to perform heavy physical labor; develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, elected officials, local agencies, and the general public; communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing; work from blueprints; ability to perform basic mathematical computations in reading and using various meters, gauges, and related devices.
Tasks require a variety of physical activities, generally involving muscular strain, such as walking, standing, stooping, sitting, lifting, reaching, etc. Periodic exposure to changing weather conditions and seasonal elements. Occasional exposure to high workplaces, work in standing water for periods of time, volatile materials, and toxic materials. Daily local travel is required in the normal course of job performance. Incumbent must frequently lift 35 to 100 pounds.
Position requires rotating stand‑by shift work and overtime, including holidays and weekends, and is subject to call‑back in emergency situations.
