Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems has an opening for a Principal/Sr. Principal Tooling Engineer Level 3/4 in Clearfield, Utah. The ideal candidate will support the A‑shift 9/80A schedule (Mon – Thur, 6:30 AM – 4:00 PM;
Every other Fri – 6:30 AM – 3:00 PM; schedule is approximate and includes a 30‑minute, unpaid lunch break).

Our team supports tooling integration efforts for aerospace composite part fabrication, handling, and assembly for the commercial and defense aerospace industries. Engineers manage their work from design concept through implementation, working with tool design, safety, engineering, manufacturing, and customers to achieve expectations.

Responsibilities
  • Manage tooling projects/assignments from concept through implementation to provide production quality aerospace tooling in support of development and production programs.
  • Manage external tooling design/fabrication shops on design/build projects.
  • Support concept and design of special tooling within an Integrated Product Team (IPT) structure.
  • Use and/or manage Computer Aided Design (CAD) resources for tooling integration support.
  • Work with suppliers to ensure successful fabrication of tooling.
  • Witness/approve source inspection of special tooling at supplier locations before acceptance.
  • Maintain tooling documentation related to design, analysis, fabrication, and proofing.
  • Provide tooling cost/schedule estimates for new tools or tooling modifications.
  • Use Microsoft applications to communicate and present tooling progress.
Basic Qualifications Principal Tooling Engineer (Level
3)
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM discipline and 4 years of experience in mechanical, manufacturing, design, industrial, materials, computational, aerospace, or aeronautics engineering OR Master’s degree in a STEM discipline and 3 years of experience OR PhD in a STEM field and 0 years of experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain DoD Secret Security Clearance and Special Program Access.
  • Experience in design, fabrication, and implementation of tooling used in composite part manufacture.
  • Experience in project management and communication skills.
  • Experience in general metallic fabrication, including welding and machining.
  • Experience using 3D CAD systems.
  • Experience creating free‑body diagrams and analyzing tooling for allowable stress and fatigue.
Sr. Principal Tooling Engineer (Level
4)
  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM discipline and 8 years of experience in mechanical, manufacturing, design, industrial, materials, computational, aerospace, or aeronautics engineering OR Master’s degree in a STEM discipline and 6 years of experience OR PhD in a STEM field and 4 years of experience.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain DoD Secret Security Clearance and Special Program Access.
  • Experience in design, fabrication, and implementation of tooling used in composite part manufacture.
  • Experience in project management and communication skills.
  • Experience in general metallic fabrication, including welding and machining.
  • Experience using 3D CAD systems.
