Summary

The Metrologist is responsible for maintaining the accuracy, traceability, and compliance of all measurement and test equipment (M&TE) used in support of pharmaceutical manufacturing, quality control, and validation activities. This role ensures that all instruments and calibration processes comply with GMP, FDA, and ISO 17025 requirements, supporting reliable data and consistent product quality.

The Metrologist also provides technical guidance to the calibration program, evaluates measurement uncertainty, and leads continuous improvement initiatives within the metrology lab.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform and document calibration, verification, and maintenance of process and laboratory instrumentation and standards in accordance with approved procedures and schedules.
  • Ensure all calibration and traceability to NIST (or equivalent) standards and properly documented in accordance with GMP and data‑integrity principles (ALCOA+).
  • Review calibration results, perform out-of‑tolerance checks, and investigate deviations.
  • Maintain metrology reference standards and coordinate external calibration services with accredited vendors.
  • Support internal and external audits by providing calibration records, certificates, and program documentation.
  • Assist in measurement system analyses, uncertainty studies, and technical troubleshooting of complex instrumentation.
  • Collaborate with Engineering, Validation, and Quality departments to ensure metrology practices meet regulatory and operational requirements.
  • Communicate clearly and concisely in written and verbal form.
  • Build positive working relationships with cross‑functional teams across multiple business units.
  • Use personal computers and have experience with Windows applications and web‑based programs.
  • Read, interpret, and apply information from files, drawings, catalogs, reports, and manuals.
  • Demonstrate strong mathematical skills applicable to assigned tasks.
  • Understand current Good Manufacturing Practice requirements.
  • Understand industrial plant safety and environment requirements.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency, reliability, and compliance of the calibration program.

Education and Experience Requirements
  • Minimum education:

    Associate’s degree in a relevant technical field OR 2 years of relevant experience.
  • Alternative:
    Proven experience or a combination of directly related education and experience that meets or exceeds the minimum requirements.
  • Preferred:
    Associate’s degree with 4 years of relevant experience, or Bachelor’s degree with 2 years of relevant experience.
Work Environment and

Physical Requirements

Work is performed in a manufacturing environment with rotating shifts. Exposure to biological fluids, chemicals, electrical equipment, hand tools, moving machinery, forklifts, tractors, power equipment, noise, dust/gas/fumes/steam, extreme temperatures (below 32°F and above 100°F), vibration, confined spaces, heights on scaffolding/ladders, uneven ground, and repetitive movements. Personal protective equipment such as protective eyewear, chemical suits, safety shoes, gloves, hearing protection, and respirators are required.

Heavy lifting up to 75 lbs. Physical tasks include standing, walking, bending, twisting, kneeling, crawling, climbing, squatting, and repetitive hand movements. Adequate vision, hearing acuity, and color perception are essential.
