Overview

The Town of Clayton is seeking applicants for a Summer Camp Director for the Parks and Recreation Department. This is a seasonal, non-benefited position for Camp Clayton at the Clayton Community Center, Clayton, NC. Applications are accepted for the nine-week camp (June–August) with Camp running Monday–Friday, 7:30am–6:00pm. The position requires 35–40 hours per week during camp and may require pre-camp planning as early as April 2025.

Directors should have experience in scheduling, planning, supervising, and leading a team of counselors, and working with children in structured settings. Directors are responsible for daily supervision of participants, activity planning, safety, and group management, and must be able to work in a team to achieve program goals.

Salary:
Grade SG100; recruitment pay rate: $16.00 per hour.

Responsibilities
  • Provide a memorable and positive camp experience
  • Model positive behavior and attitude for youth campers
  • Responsible for training and operations of drop-off and pick-up procedures
  • Conduct daily check-in and check-out as needed
  • Mediate camper issues/discipline and complete necessary paperwork
  • Supervise camp staff
  • Create weekly staff schedules
  • Create weekly camper group schedules
  • Oversee all camp operations and inventory camp supplies
  • Communicate with parents/guardians regarding camper attendance, discipline, accommodations and inclusion, missing items, injuries
  • Conduct camp orientations and morning meetings for counselors and campers
  • Conduct camp staff evaluations
  • Manage late camper check-ins and escort children to groups
  • Assist with early and regular pick-up procedures in afternoons
  • Assist with room setups and special camp activities
  • Ensure daily staff cleaning schedule is followed and assist with cleaning
  • Monitor and distribute admission tickets/supplies for camp activities
  • Answer camp questions during drop-off and pick-up
  • Maintain clean and safe work and play areas
  • Oversee snack and lunch time with participants
  • Plan and implement special daily and weekly activities
  • Monitor campers with special medical needs
  • Administer first aid and document incidents
  • Identify unsafe situations and report them to the Recreation Program Coordinator
  • Enforce program rules and document incidents
  • Carry out duties safely in accordance with Town policies
  • Other related duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education/

Experience:

Equivalent training and experience demonstrating required knowledge, abilities, and skills.

Knowledge:
Basic knowledge of Town and Department policies, safety rules, and camp operations.

Skills:

Customer service, group management, and emergency response.

Abilities:
Maintain a safe work environment; administer first aid and CPR; manage large groups of children; follow directions and enforce rules; communicate effectively in writing and orally; exercise judgment to ensure safety; maintain professional relationships with campers, parents, employees, and community partners.

Licenses/Certifications/Equipment: A valid driver’s license; must be 21 years of age at time of employment.
