Overview

The Family Court of St. Louis County is hiring for a Part Time (24 hours per week) Juvenile Detention Transportation Officer position within the Detention Department.

The Part-Time Juvenile Detention Transportation Officer is responsible for the secure and safe transportation of juvenile detainees between detention facilities, court appearances, medical appointments, and other approved destinations. This position also includes the supervision of juvenile residents within the detention facility, ensuring the safety of the youth, staff, and the public while maintaining strict compliance with applicable laws, policies, and procedures.

Work is performed under the general supervision of a Detention Supervisor and reviewed through reports, observations, and supervisory conferences for adherence to department policies and the effective accomplishment of objectives.

3 days per week 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, Monday - Friday

Salary: $21.49/Hourly This position receives 10% addition to pay. Position is eligible for 10% shift differential when working second or third shifts.

After successful completion of the probationary period, employees become eligible for annual merit increases based on performance appraisal ratings contingent upon budgetary availability.

The Part-Time Juvenile Detention Transportation Officer is responsible for the safe, secure, and professional transportation of juvenile residents to and from various locations, including courts, detention centers, medical facilities, and other approved destinations. Officers plan and execute all aspects of each transport assignment, which includes inspecting and preparing the transport vehicle, searching the vehicle and security equipment, determining appropriate types and levels of restraints, and considering any special security or medical needs of the resident.

During transport, officers maintain constant supervision and enforce all safety and security protocols. They conduct searches of juveniles and their property prior to transport to ensure contraband-free travel. Officers are required to complete all related documentation accurately and in a timely manner, including transport logs, incident reports, and other required records.

Maintaining the safety and operational readiness of assigned transport vehicles is also essential. This includes regular inspections, cleanliness, and ensuring all equipment is functioning properly. Throughout each trip, the officer must remain alert, professional, and responsive to potential risks, ensuring the welfare of the youth and the safety of the public.

Responsibilities
  • Collaborates with the Detention Center’s Duty Supervisor to support Detention Center operations. Examples:
  • Conduct room, unit, and/or body searches of residents.
  • Monitor visitation process, ensuring authorization of each visitor.
  • Act as backup and provide coverage for unit leaders as needed.
  • Treat all juveniles in accordance with their constitutional rights and Juvenile Code provisions.
  • Observe residents’ behavior and attitudes; maintain detailed daily logs of occurrences and general behavior.
  • Consult with staff, including the juvenile’s Delinquency Services Deputy Juvenile Officer, regarding juveniles’ physical or emotional needs; perform crisis intervention as needed; remain alert to suicide risk.
  • Maintain order and discipline among residents; escort juveniles to meals and programmed activities.
  • Operate security equipment such as keys, automated door controls, paging systems, and CCTV.
  • Conduct room, unit, and body searches.
  • Provide first aid
  • Physically restrain residents when necessary and intercede in physical altercations involving residents or staff.
  • Serve as a positive role model by speaking respectfully to residents, acknowledging trauma-informed care principles.
  • Attend staff meetings, in-service training sessions, and conferences to enhance professional development.
  • Remain prepared to respond to emergencies such as fires and other critical incidents.
  • Completes a minimum of 24 hours of approved training annually to maintain and improve professional competencies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned to support the overall goals and safety of the facility.
