Job Overview
St. Louis County Department of Public Health is hiring nurses for Corrections Medicine. Responsibilities- Delivers care focused on admission and sick‑call assessments for medical and mental health needs, including medication administration based on manual processes.
- Provides treatment in adult and juvenile medicine, general and trauma surgery, OB/GYN, orthopedics, psychiatry, dermatology, and other specialized areas.
- Navigates a secured correctional setting, requiring knowledge of security precautions and continuous focus on patient safety.
- Conducts comprehensive health‑care assessments and applies standing orders, other defined protocols, and case‑management documents.
- Documents all care comprehensively to support the patient’s care pathway.
- Applies critical thinking to identify scenarios requiring engagement of clinical leaders and providers.
- Provides patient‑advocate care, demonstrating customer service, de‑escalation, resilience, and partnership skills.
- Maintains strong work habits, dependability, positive attitude, and problem‑solving, communication, and documentation skills.
- Performs related work as required.
- Registered Nurse licensure by the Missouri State Board of Nursing.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification within 180 days of employment.
- Experience with adult and juvenile patient populations in a correctional or similar setting is preferred.
- Strong communication, documentation, partnership, and critical‑thinking skills.
Typical starting salary is $29 per hour. A 10% differential is added for public health roles in Corrections Medicine. Evening and night shifts receive a 10% differential, resulting in total compensation of $33.15 per hour for day shifts and $34.80 per hour for evening and night shifts. Nurses also receive a $1.25 hourly addition for ACLS certification, up to $100 per pay period.

Selection & AppointmentApplicants undergo evaluation by a selection committee based on education, experience, supplemental questions, employment references, and other relevant information. A qualifying grade of 70 or more on the interview supplemental questions is required. Candidates submit a Conviction Questionnaire within 3 days of notification.
All assessed applicants will undergo a urinalysis screening for illegal drug use before appointment.
COVID-19 Vaccination PolicyAll newly hired employees must provide proof of full COVID‑19 vaccination prior to starting service. Full vaccination includes two doses of a two‑dose vaccine or one dose of a single‑dose vaccine, with immunocompromised individuals allowed a 3‑dose mRNA series or a single‑dose Janssen vaccine. Employees exempt due to medical or religious reasons must wear facial coverings and submit to weekly COVID‑19 testing.
