Overview

St. Louis County Department of Public Health is seeking nursing professionals to work in Corrections Medicine. The role involves using critical thinking and a patient‑focused approach to care for adult and juvenile patients in a secured correctional setting. Responsibilities include comprehensive assessments, medication administration, and collaboration with security staff.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver care focused on admission and sick call assessments for medical and mental health needs; administer medication based on manual management processes; respond to complex, acute, urgent, and emergent health needs.
  • Provide specialized care in adult and juvenile medicine, general and trauma surgery, OB/GYN, orthopedics, psychiatry, dermatology, and other areas as required.
  • Conduct comprehensive health care assessments, apply standing orders and protocols, document care completely, and use critical thinking to identify when clinical leaders and providers should be engaged.
  • Maintain a patient‑advocate approach, demonstrate customer service, de‑escalation, resilience, and partnership skills to preserve patient dignity at all times.
  • Complement job knowledge with quality work, productivity, strong work habits, dependability, positive attitude, and strong problem‑solving, communication, and documentation skills.
  • Perform related work as required.
Qualifications
  • Current licensure as a Registered Nurse by the Missouri State Board of Nursing.
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification within 180 days of employment.
  • Availability to work in a 24/7/365 environment with weekend and holiday hours; full‑time, part‑time, and PRN positions available.
  • Strong skills in communication, documentation, partnership, and critical thinking.
Compensation and Benefits

Typical starting salary is $29.00 per hour. A 10% differential is added for public health roles in Corrections Medicine, resulting in $33.15 per hour for day shifts and $34.80 for evening and night shifts. Nurses receive a $1.25 hourly addition for ACLS certification (up to $100 per pay period). Benefits include health, dental, and vision insurance; 4 weeks of paid time off in the first year;

11 paid holidays; deferred benefit retirement plan; paid life insurance; short and long‑term disability; and the option to participate in the Federal Government’s Public Service Loan Forgiveness program.

Selection and Appointment

A selection committee will evaluate applicants based on education, experience, supplemental questions, employment references, and other relevant information. Candidates must earn a qualifying grade of 70 or more on the interview and complete a Conviction Questionnaire within 3 days. The top five ranking candidates will be certified to the Department Director/Appointing Authority for final hiring. Conditional offers require urinalysis screening for illegal drug use prior to appointment, covered by the County.

All newly hired employees must provide proof of COVID‑19 vaccination prior to starting service, in accordance with CMS regulations. Full vaccination includes receipt of an FDA Emergency Use Authorization‑approved vaccine or series. Employees with medical or religious contraindications may request an exemption; exempt employees must wear facial coverings and submit to weekly testing.
