Opportunity

WSDOT is currently seeking a Highway Maintenance Worker Lead to serve as a member of the South Central Region’s (SCR) Maintenance & Operations team. In this role, you will be responsible for overseeing the daily maintenance work in the Clarkston Maintenance facility in Area 4 of the South‑Central region, their personal safety and the safety of other crew members. Other duties include the maintenance and repair of the roadway, roadside, right of way, and all associated highway safety features which are part of the highway system.

The Highway Maintenance Worker Lead will also supervise three Highway Maintenance Workers and one Maintenance Mechanic
3. This position supports the Strategic Plan of WSDOT by providing maintenance necessary for the continued safe and uninhibited travel of the public in the movement of people, goods, and services across the State of Washington.

What to Expect

This position performs work that is often physical in nature and performed primarily outdoors and often next to high‑volume, high‑speed traffic that may require standing for extended periods of time. A typical schedule is Monday through Thursday, 40‑hours per week, for four 10‑hour days. Days, nights, weekends and holidays may be required to respond to non‑scheduled or call‑out emergencies. Rotational night shift is required.

Responsibilities
  • Prioritize, plan, schedule, and budget maintenance activities, lead, schedule, and direct highway maintenance activities.
  • Perform asphalt and concrete pavement maintenance and repair; apply concrete, asphalt, and synthetic materials.
  • Perform drainage maintenance including catch basins, sedimentation facilities, and ditches; erosion and slide repair; sign maintenance and repair; and guardrail, fence, and impact attenuator installation and repair.
  • Maintain and submit daily records and reports of maintenance activities; enter all maintenance activities into computerized systems (e.g., Highway Activity Tracking System (HATS), Work Zone Database (WZDB), Traffic Sign Management System (TSMS), etc.); review computerized records to ensure accuracy.
  • Operate Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) and heavy equipment such as dump truck with plow and sander units, front end loaders, truck/trailer combos, sweepers, mowers, and pickups.
  • Train personnel in equipment usage, safety, highway maintenance, and public relations.
  • Lead crew during winter snow and ice operations.
  • Act as traffic control lead on emergency operations and assist crews in setting up and performing traffic control during emergency operations; act as a first responder at accident scenes, spills, or other emergency situations.
  • Utilize personal computer and tablet to maintain accurate records and reports for personnel, equipment, inventory, and materials.
  • Assist in the safe cleanup and removal of unlawful dwellings.
Qualifications Highway and Roadway Maintenance Expertise
  • Demonstrated experience performing routine and emergency maintenance on highways, roadways, and related infrastructure including pavement repair, drainage systems, erosion control, vegetation management, sign and guardrail installation, and debris removal.
  • Ability to assess maintenance needs and perform repairs to highway structures, roadside features, and landscapes.
Heavy Equipment Operations
  • Skilled in operating and maintaining heavy equipment (e.g., Front‑end loaders, tractor mowers, sweepers, flushers, truck‑mounted attenuators, backhoe, Vactor, 26,000 – 56,000 GVW dump truck with snowplow and chemical deicer attachments).
