RN Women's Services

POSITION PURPOSE

Responsible for the delivery of safe, effective, and quality patient and family centered care in the Postpartum Care Department for all patient populations. Roles during this phase of care focus on assessing the patient and developing a plan of care designed to meet the physical, psychological, educational, and sociocultural needs of the patient and family. This includes validation of existing information and completion of preparation of the patient.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Graduate of an accredited school of nursing. Bachelor's Degree is preferred.

Experience:

Prior critical care or intensive care experience is preferred. Prior Labor & Delivery, obstetric/gynecological or surgical experience is preferred.

Licenses/Certificates:

Current Mississippi RN licensure is required. BLS & ACLS certification is required. PALS certification is preferred. STABLE and CPI certifications are strongly preferred.

Working Conditions:

Regularly exposed to the risk of blood borne/airborne disease; contact with patients under a wide variety of circumstances; exposed to unpleasant elements (accidents, injuries, chemicals and illness); subject to varying and unpredictable situations; able to handle emergency, crisis or pressured situations; subject to multiple interruptions; occasionally subject to extended or irregular hours; requires judgment/actions that impact patient outcomes.

VISUAL AND HEARING REQUIREMENTS

Must be able to see with corrective eye wear. Must be able to hear clearly with assistance. May be exposed to infectious and contagious diseases. May be in contact with patients in a wide variety of circumstances. Able to handle emergency or crisis situations. Occasionally subject to irregular hours. May be required to wear protective equipment as necessary.

General Duties

  • Demonstrates responsible decision making in planning, providing, and delegating of patient care based on assessment/continuous reassessment.
  • Establishes and maintains two-way communication with peers, staff, physicians and administration.
  • Documents patient chart accurately, legibly and timely according to facility and regulatory standards.
  • Participates in continuing education relating to Women's Services, obstetric/gynecological nursing, in-service education, and department/facility meetings.
  • Participates in Continuous Quality Improvement Efforts to ensure program effectiveness.
  • Adapts and supports change in a positive and professional manner. Cooperates with peers and supports group decisions.
  • Maintains validated competency skills as required for the Women's Services Department.
  • Participates in the orientation, instruction, training and mentoring of new and existing staff.
  • Transcribes, reviews, documents and carries out all orders and patient/family education in a timely manner.
  • Timely reporting and documentation of unexpected or adverse events; participation as appropriate in incident reporting and/or investigation.
  • Anticipates and prepares for physician rounding/procedures; assists physician as requested.

  • (Nursing/Support Services) Communicates with patients and family by updating Patient Communication Boards (white boards) and bedside shift report.
  • Standards for Safety

  • Follows safety guidelines in safety manual.
  • Knows RACE procedures, location of closest fire extinguisher.
  • Speaks up for safety and reports potential safety issues to leader.
  • Attends all required safety education programs.
  • Provides complete and accurate response to safety questions.
