Registered Nurse

Medical Surgical unit Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing competent, evidence-based care to patients with oversight of licensed vocational nurses/nursing assistants as appropriate to the setting. Will assist in directing the provision of nursing education, orientation, competencies and providing quality improvement and enhance outcomes utilization.

* The Medical Surgical Registered Nurse integrates knowledge, skills, abilities, and judgment and is self-directed in goal setting for managing complex situations.

* Validates understanding of the rationale for care processes and decisions.

* Questions clinical practices for the purpose of providing evidence-based care. The nurse will demonstrate the ability to cope with and manage competing priorities.

* Demonstrates competence in practice and decision-making, deliberate planning, and critical thinking skills. Provides emergent/urgent care to acute and chronically ill Veterans.

* Responsible in assuring that appropriate documentation reflects assessment of patient needs, interdisciplinary treatment plans, clinical interventions, and evaluation of patients' responses to treatments. In addition, the nurse delivers fundamental, knowledge-based care to adult and geriatric patients while developing technical competence.

* Initiates treatments, medication, emergency, and resuscitative measures based on appropriate standing orders and protocols as permitted within the RN scope of practice;
Administers therapeutic measures as prescribed by the physician;
Observes and assesses hospitalized patients' health status by physical assessment, examination and interviews;
Provides nursing care to meet the physical, emotional, spiritual and cultural needs of patients;
Operates and monitors specialized equipment.

* Must demonstrate the ability to work in a fast-paced medical/surgical environment and have strong assessment, consultation, and interpersonal skills.

* Performs an initial assessment of assigned patients and documents findings in a manner that will accurately describe the clinical conditions of the patients. After assessment, the nurses will consult and coordinate with health care team members to plan, implement, and evaluate patient care needs.

* Expected to assume primary care of assigned patients and complete provider orders. This includes but is not limited to multiple types of specimen collection, wound care and therapy. This also includes PO, IV, IM and PR medication administration, GI and GU interventions, and direct collaboration with ancillary services such as radiology, MRI, Ultrasound, and Respiratory Therapy.

* Regularly assess patient response to ordered interventions and to monitor and record periodic vital signs in the frequency ordered by the provider.

* The nurse will monitor and report any decline in patient condition. The nurse will assist provider as needed with exams, diagnostic testing, and treatments.
