Governor Morehead School (GMS) is the flagship school in North Carolina that serves the special needs of visually impaired students, in a unique residential setting. Apart from its flagship status as the only residential school in the state for visually impaired students, GMS is renowned for its excellent program in Orientation and Mobility as well as its Braille Music program.
** Description of Work
** This position is located at the Governor Morehead School for the Blind and involves highly skilled work in the maintenance, repair, modification, design, and installation of complex electronic systems and devices used to support educational, instructional, and operational functions. Positions in this class design and construct specialized, one-of-a-kind electronic devices and assist with maintaining electronic infrastructure that supports classrooms, laboratories, accessibility technologies, and campus operations.

** Design work is differentiated from the Electronics Technician I level by less reliance on standard circuitry and routine modifications and greater reliance on the adaptation and modification of electronic circuitry to perform new, specialized, or unusual functions. Positions may consult with faculty, instructional staff, and technical personnel to determine requirements for electronic teaching aids, assistive technology devices, research instruments, or specialized communication systems supporting students who are blind or visually impaired.
Maintenance and repair are performed on both custom-designed devices and complex electronic systems where troubleshooting challenges are increased due to interconnected components and limited documentation. Schematic diagrams, wiring diagrams, or repair manuals may be incomplete or unavailable. Work is evaluated based on the effectiveness of system design, reliability of equipment, timeliness of repairs, and the ability to support instructional and campus technology needs.

* • Considerable knowledge of electronic principles.
• Considerable knowledge of mathematical principles as applied to electronic circuit design and analysis.
• Considerable knowledge of the fundamentals of physics as applied to electronics.
• Working knowledge of the use of standard and specialized electronic testing equipment.
• Ability to modify electronic circuitry or design electronic circuits to perform unusual or innovative functions.
• Ability to perform maintenance on non-standard electronic devices and complex electronic systems that may have limited documentation and require rapid, effective repair.
• Ability to develop innovative troubleshooting and electronic testing procedures.
• Ability to read and comprehend technical publications, electronics journals, and textbooks describing advances in electronics and apply new theories and components to design work.
• Ability to support and maintain electronic systems used in educational and assistive technology environments serving students who are blind or visually impaired.
• Ability to communicate technical information effectively with educators, administrators, and technical staff to ensure electronic systems meet instructional and operational needs.
