Description:

What you ll be doing at a glance is to join Scripps College as the AVP for Business Affairs and Assistant Treasurer, reporting to the VP for Business Affairs/Treasurer, and balancing strategic financial stewardship with hands-on operational leadership.

What you will do

The AVP for Business Affairs provides vision, leadership, and oversight for financial planning, budgeting, certain accounting services, investments, real estate transactions (in association with the in-house broker), and selected administrative and auxiliary functions. The role supports the College s mission and serves as the primary representative to The Claremont Colleges Services for fiscal coordination.

Essential Duties
  • Leadership & Governance:
    Collaborate across campus; manage financial operations; participate in the Executive Leadership Team; represent Business Affairs on College committees; support Financial Stewardship, Investment, and Audit, Risk and Compliance committees; promote the College s Principles of Community and Institutional Values.
  • Budgeting, Planning & Financial Strategy:
    Lead Budget and Procurement Office; manage the comprehensive budget process (operating, capital, auxiliary, cash flow); develop forecasts; establish budgeting policies and timelines; support policy development and benchmarking; prepare materials for governance committees.
  • Financial Operations & Accounting:
    Oversee student accounts, accounting operations, and financial reporting; ensure internal controls and regulatory compliance; coordinate with The Claremont Colleges Services Financial Services Office; manage audits and year-end close.
  • Investments & Endowment Management:
    Oversee investment portfolio; monitor performance, asset allocation, liquidity, and risk; coordinate with investment advisors and fund managers; support student-led financial initiatives and reporting.
  • Financial Planning, Facilities, and Capital Projects:
    Lead financial planning for facilities, capital projects, construction management, and lifecycle planning; monitor budgets; align investments with institutional priorities.
  • Real Estate and Housing:
    Manage real estate portfolio and housing properties; coordinate with The Claremont Colleges Services office; advise on tenant relations and real estate transactions; support ROI modeling and financing for real estate opportunities.
  • Treasury Operations:
    Supervise treasury functions; manage cash flow and short-term investments; maintain a treasury dashboard; oversee real estate proceeds processing.
  • Scenario Planning:
    Support long-range planning; develop capital plans; conduct financial stress tests and analyses of revenue, cash flows, and scenarios.
  • Capital Structure & Financing:
    Monitor debt strategies; work with financial advisory partners on bonds and debt instruments; ensure compliance with legal requirements; evaluate sale-leaseback transactions; monitor lease obligations and arbitrage compliance.
Qualifications
  • Master s degree in business, finance, or related field (or equivalent experience); CPA strongly preferred.
  • 10+ years of progressive financial leadership experience in higher education preferred.
  • Deep understanding of higher education finance, particularly for tuition-dependent liberal arts institutions.
  • Strong financial modeling, scenario planning, and risk management expertise.
  • Proven experience with governance, compliance, internal controls, and audits.
  • Collaborative, solutions-oriented leadership style with sound judgment and initiative.
  • Ability to communicate complex financial issues clearly to diverse stakeholders.
Compensation & Benefits

The anticipated annual base salary range is $225,000 – $287,500, based on experience. Scripps offers a comprehensive compensation and benefits package. More information: (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below)./
