Position: Public Works Laborer (Highway)

The City of Claremont is seeking a motivated and dependable Public Works Laborer in the Highway Department to join our Department of Public Works team.

Our DPW team maintains the infrastructure that keeps Claremont moving — including roads, water and sewer systems, cemeteries, public grounds, and essential municipal facilities.

What You’ll Do

As a Public Works Laborer, you will perform a wide range of skilled and unskilled duties related to the maintenance, repair, and construction of city infrastructure, including:

  • Safe use of hand tools such as shovels, rakes, picks, crowbars, and brooms
  • Operation of assigned vehicles and light, medium, and heavy equipment
  • Maintenance, repair, and installation of:
    • Water storage facilities, pump stations, water lines, hydrants, and meters
    • Sanitary sewer pipes, manholes, pumping stations, and storm drainage systems
    • Roads, sidewalks, curbing, and traffic signage
  • Street sweeping, pothole patching, grading, and concrete work
  • Mowing, landscaping, snow removal, cemetery operations, and solid waste transfer station duties
  • Building and shop maintenance
  • Tree maintenance and removal
  • Providing guidance to less experienced employees as assigned
  • Performing other related duties necessary to support DPW operations

Employees work under the general direction of the Division Superintendent and Foremen, with increasing independence as experience is gained.

Because this position regularly interacts with the public, professionalism, courtesy, and sound judgment are essential.

What We’re Looking For

Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma required (trade school training in heavy construction or public works preferred)
  • Two (2) years of related construction experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods
  • Knowledge of construction tools, materials, and safety practices
  • Ability to safely operate equipment in varying terrain and all New England weather conditions
  • Ability to follow instructions and maintain basic records
Work Environment &

Physical Requirements
  • Primarily outdoor work (approximately 85%, season-dependent)
  • Exposure to all New England weather conditions
  • Frequent lifting up to 25 lbs., occasional lifting over 50 lbs.
  • Regular standing, walking, bending, twisting, climbing, and equipment operation

This is an active, physical role suited for individuals who enjoy working outdoors and staying physically engaged throughout the day.
