Location: 5 West Cardiac Progressive Care, Jefferson Hospital

Jefferson's Progressive Cardiac Care Unit consists of 28 beds with capabilities for high level cardiac monitoring. Integrated patient care is provided for patients with Pre/Post Op Open Heart Surgery, Cardiac Procedures such as catheterizations, ablations and pacemakers, and patients that may require BiPAP, pacing wires, chest tubes, and titratable intravenous drips.

General Overview

The Registered Nurse assesses human responses and plans, implements and evaluates nursing care for individuals or families for whom the nurse is responsible. The RN is fully responsible for all actions as a licensed nurse and is accountable to patients for the quality of care delivered.

Essential Responsibilities
  • Provide leadership in a professional practice setting.
  • Team player who contributes to building the team through role‑modeling and mentoring.
  • Assign or delegate tasks based on patient needs and staff skill level; oversee charge duties and lunch delegations.
  • Consider safety, patient condition, complexity of intervention, and predictability of outcome.
  • Provide verbal and written feedback to peers regarding clinical practice and role performance.
  • Share knowledge and skills with peers and colleagues.
  • Accept mistakes—self or others—to foster a culture where risk‑taking is safe and expected.
  • Participate on interdisciplinary teams to evaluate clinical care or health services.
  • Promote patient safety initiatives such as National Patient Safety Goals.
  • Engage in department‑specific quality initiatives (e.g., evidence‑based practice); ensure appropriate order sets are used.
  • Supervise and evaluate assigned LPN scope of practice as appropriate.
  • Utilize the nursing process to assess, plan, evaluate, and implement a patient plan of care per physician, nurse, and hospital policy, including patient and family input.
  • Develop culturally and age‑appropriate expected outcomes involving patient, family, and other health care providers.
  • Analyze health status of individuals and families, compare data with normative values when possible, to determine patient care needs.
  • Assess patient reports/records, detect change of condition, notify physician/supervisor and intervene appropriately, documenting accordingly.
  • Accept assignments in units beyond the primary unit, performing duties within individualized competency.
  • Demonstrate commitment to continuous lifelong learning for self and others.
  • Promote the profession through participation in professional organizations.
  • Seek formal and independent learning activities using current research to maintain and develop clinical and professional skills.
  • Participate in systematic peer review and obtain informal feedback regarding one’s own practice from patients, peers, and professionals; identify strengths and development needs.
  • Meet time and attendance guidelines per hospital policy.
  • Continuously evaluate patient and family satisfaction.
  • Participate in department‑specific patient satisfaction initiatives.
  • Promote compassionate, patient‑ and family‑centered communication.
  • Assess and attempt to resolve patient/family concerns.
  • Use effective time‑management skills to complete assigned duties within the established shift.
Qualifications

Minimum:

  • Act 34 Criminal Background Clearance Certificate
  • Act 33 Child Abuse Clearance Certificate
  • Act 73 FBI Fingerprinting Criminal Background Clearance Certificate
  • Certified RN licensure in PA or current multi‑state licensure through the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC)
  • CPR certification

Preferred:

  • Certification in area of specialty
