Patient Care Technician I – Observation – Jefferson Hospital – Part Time
Allegheny Health Network is seeking a dedicated Patient Care Technician to provide direct care and support to patients in the Observation unit.
General OverviewThis position provides direct patient care and aids in unit coordination. Responsibilities include basic nursing procedures for patients in stable condition, assistance with acutely ill patients under RN supervision, implementation of medical asepsis, maintaining patient privacy, and responding to emergencies. The role also involves unit upkeep, documentation in the electronic medical record, coordination of admissions, discharges, transfers, and various support tasks.
EssentialResponsibilities
- Provides, obtains, or performs direct patient care and activities such as activities of daily living, skin survey, vital signs, ambulation, specimen collection, intake and output, meal consumption, height and weight, blood glucose testing/monitoring, point‑of‑care testing, bladder scanning, transporting patients and their medical record, documentation of O₂, early mobilization and ambulation protocols, and assistance with exams, treatments and procedures. (30%)
- Participates in quality and patient satisfaction initiatives, including bedside shift reports, purposeful hourly rounding, falls prevention, hand washing, isolation protocols, and maintaining a clean and orderly environment. (30%)
- Accurately documents vital signs, weights, I&O, restraints, specimen collection, and all other treatments; reports changes in patient condition and concerns to nursing staff. (20%)
- Participates in unit activity such as supply stocking and equipment/appliance cleaning, checks and retrieval. (20%)
- Performs other duties as assigned. (10%)
- High School Diploma or GED
- Limited or no experience; must attend 2 weeks of training
- Ability to read, write and follow oral and written instructions
- Ability to perform basic mathematics
- Basic computer skills
- CPR – American Heart Association certification
- Act 34 Criminal Background Clearance Certificate
- Act 33 Child Abuse Clearance Certificate
- Act 73 FBI Fingerprinting Criminal Background Clearance Certificate
- Acute care experience within the last 3 years
- Currently enrolled in an ASN or BSN program; preference given to enrollment in an associate’s or bachelor’s degree nursing program with at least one clinical rotation completed
