Mechanical Manufacturing Engineer
Company Description Emporia is accelerating the energy transition by helping small commercial and residential consumers save up to 50% on their utility bills.
We combine automated energy management tools and real-time 24/7 energy monitoring with utility rate schedules to give our customers true insight into how they are using and spending money on energy. Our EV chargers, Smart Outlets, home batteries and cloud integrations to thermostat and EV APIs allow us to reduce pollution, shift usage to less expensive times and save our customers money.
Job Description At Emporia, hardware products are the tip of the spear - attracting customers, fueling data analytics, and enabling demand response through integration with Emporia's energy management platform. We provide our customers with reliable, high-value-add products at industry leading pricing. We are looking for a Mechanical Manufacturing Engineer to serve as the critical bridge between our Colorado-based mechanical engineering team and our contract manufacturing partners in Mexico.
This role will be responsible for new product introductions (NPI), production ramp, sustaining engineering, and ongoing manufacturing support. You will be the boots-on-the-ground problem solver who ensures our designs transition smoothly from development to mass production, while also maintaining and improving existing production lines. This position requires someone who can make critical go/no-go decisions independently, balance new product launches with sustaining activities, and has the technical expertise to identify and resolve issues on the production line before they become major problems.
Required Qualifications & Skills
● BS Mechanical Engineering or Manufacturing Engineering
● Professional Experience range: 5-10 years
● Direct experience working at or with contract manufacturers, preferably for electronic assemblies
● Proven track record of successful new product introductions and production ramps
● Experience identifying manufacturing defects and making disposition decisions (scrap, rework, use-as-is)
● Strong understanding of manufacturing processes: injection molding, sheet metal fabrication, assembly operations
● Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, GD&T, and assembly instructions
● Experience with PFMEA, control plans, and manufacturing quality systems such as ISO
9001 or IATF
16949
● Strong understanding of change management, root cause analysis (RCA) and 8D problem-solving methodology
● AQL and inspection sampling in a production setting
● Comfortable making critical decisions under pressure with incomplete information
● Ability to travel frequently (30-50%) to CM facilities in Mexico, OR willingness to be based in Mexico as a foreign national employed by Emporia
● Bilingual (English/Spanish) required Nice to Haves
● Experience with consumer electronics or EV charging products
● Knowledge of UL/IEC certification requirements and production audits
● Lean manufacturing and continuous improvement experience (Six Sigma, Kaizen)
● Experience with high-volume plastic enclosure assembly
● Familiarity with supplier quality engineering and corrective action processes
● Experience managing production tooling and fixture design
● Knowledge of import/export compliance and country of origin requirements
Key Responsibilities
● Lead NPI activities at CM including process validation, first article inspection, and production pilot runs
● Manage sustaining engineering: yield improvement, process optimization, and ECO implementation
● Conduct regular site visits to monitor production quality and resolve manufacturing issues
● Make real-time product disposition decisions (scrap, rework, release) and investigate field quality issues through root cause analysis
● Collaborate with Colorado engineering team to translate design intent into manufacturable processes
● Develop and maintain manufacturing documentation: work instructions, inspection criteria, and quality standards
● Drive cost reduction initiatives through DFM improvements and support production scaling with CM partners
