Overview

Fleet Services by Cox Automotive is the leading provider of on-site mobile maintenance and repair services nationwide for light, medium, and heavy-duty trucks and trailers. We operate 50+ nationwide service centers and support a 24/7 in-house call-center. This is a dedicated on-site shop position; we do not provide emergency roadside repairs.

Job Summary

We are currently hiring a Shop Trailer Mechanic II for a dedicated on-site shop role. The Shop Trailer Technician II will perform certified DOT inspections, preventative maintenance inspections, light repairs, and other duties as assigned (including aluminum and chem-lite, trailer brakes, air lines, auxiliary pumps and engines, liftgates, brake chambers, welding, fabrication, replacement of panels, body and framework). The Technician II can perform more advanced repairs under supervision and assists higher-level technicians while continuing to learn advanced mechanical skills.

A successful Technician II complies with all company policies and achieves high performance metrics.

Duties
  • Always follows and complies with safe operating practices and procedures.
  • Independently determine parts required for each job and interact with the Shop Parts Department to obtain them.
  • Maintain a clean and safe work environment; assist in cleanup at the end of each day for tools, parts, and equipment.
  • Apply knowledge gained through formal training or on-the-job experience to perform duties; work with, understand, and evaluate technical information related to the job.
  • Work with Service Writer to assess customer needs and assist in resolving problems or satisfying expectations.
  • Manage concurrent tasks with effective prioritization of work and time allocations.
  • Act with integrity, maintain confidentiality, and adhere to ethical and professional standards.
  • Perform scheduled preventative maintenance (PM), DOT inspections, and follow-up repairs on light, medium, and heavy-duty vehicles in a shop environment.
  • Perform routine maintenance such as changing oil, checking batteries, and lubricating equipment.
  • Use hand tools, precision instruments, trailer tools, welding equipment, lifts and jacks.
  • Document work per company standards and upload pictures of work performed, parts used, and findings on Repair Orders using company devices or Karmak application.
  • Accurately complete DOT forms and other documentation in a timely fashion.
  • Maintain a high level of productivity and work within standard repair times.
  • Communicate with Shop Manager and support teams to obtain approvals, retrieve PO numbers, and discuss RO findings.
  • Perform work in compliance with safety, health, and environmental policies and federal regulations (OSHA, EPA, DOT).
  • Participate in all required safety training.
  • Maintain shop-assigned service trucks, conduct safety checks, and daily pre/post trip inspections.
  • Perform minor adjustment and repairs on various trailer equipment and systems (e.g., aluminum and chem-lite, trailer brakes, air lines, pumps, liftgates, brake chambers, steering systems).
  • Diagnose, adjust, and repair trailer equipment and systems, including welding, fabrication, replacement of panels, body, and framework.
  • Identify problems, evaluate information, and generate/assess alternatives.
  • Inspect, test, and listen to equipment to diagnose malfunctions using appropriate tools.
  • Assist Shop Trailer Technician I with diagnostics as needed.
Requirements
  • High School Diploma/GED and 3 years’ experience in a related field. Alternative combinations: any level degree/certification beyond HS in a related discipline; or 5 years’ related experience.
  • Possess and supply a set of hand tools necessary to perform required duties.
  • OEM training and certifications are preferred.
  • Participate in and complete all required company training.
  • This position follows regulations issued by the Department of Transportation’s FMCSA. Candidate must pass a DOT pre-employment background screening and DOT physical before employment.
  • A current and valid DOT medical card with more than four months remaining may be submitted in lieu of a DOT physical; if four months or less remain, a DOT physical is required.
