IMLS Scholar in Felid Reproductive Science and Conservation

The Center for Conservation and Research of Endangered Wildlife (CREW) at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden, through its Imperiled Cat Signature Project, is seeking to hire a conscientious individual with good organizational and communication skills to serve as the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS)-funded Scholar in Felid Reproductive Science and Conservation. The position is a full-time, 12-month internship with an annual stipend of $35,000, paid in bi-weekly intervals, and includes a comprehensive benefits package.

Funding is included in this position to attend a scientific conference to foster networking and future job opportunities. CREW is a state-of-the-art research facility located on zoo grounds and dedicated to science that helps save imperiled plants and animals from extinction. Our non-domestic cat studies at CREW are currently focused on assessing the reproductive health of females through a multimodal approach, implementing efficient real-time methods of estrus detection, optimizing natural cycle ovulation induction protocols, and capacity building of the zoological community through advanced scientific training.

Position

summary

CREW is committed to training the next generation of scientists, with a primary focus on feline health, welfare, and reproductive physiology. The IMLS Scholar position seeks to provide immersive, hands-on experience in the field of zoo conservation science to an early career scientist. The successful candidate will work closely with, and be mentored by CREW scientists, including Director of the Imperiled Cat Signature Project, Dr.

Lindsey Vansandt. Responsibilities will include sample processing for and performance of hormone immunoassays, vaginal cytology slide staining and analysis, post-thaw semen analyses (including morphological analysis, immunostaining, and heterologous in vitro fertilization), data entry, and data analysis. Participation in assisted reproduction procedures (such as reproductive examinations, semen collection, gamete rescue, and artificial insemination) will be offered to foster professional growth and development.

Additionally, candidates may have the opportunity to design, lead, and take ownership of an independent project, depending on their interests and skills.

Qualifications

This position is open to candidates with a bachelor’s degree in Animal Sciences, Biology, or a related field. Training will be provided for all responsibilities listed above, so prior experience is not required. However, candidates with relevant knowledge or experience may receive additional consideration. Applicants must have a visa to work legally in the United States. Additionally, the ideal candidate should:

  • Possess a strong understanding of basic study design principles
  • Be organized with strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Be able to work autonomously, with independent judgment, as well as in a collaborative team environment
  • Have the capacity to expand areas of expertise and learn new skills to meet the changing needs of the team
  • Be open to change and considerable variety in work activities and be able alter approach to tasks and projects with minimal loss of efficiency
  • Demonstrate computer competency, including the management of computerized databases and a working knowledge of the Microsoft Office Suite
  • Possess the soft skills required to work and communicate effectively with a variety of people, including CREW scientists, staff, volunteers, interns, students, donors, and the general public
  • Be able to represent CREW in a professional manner
