About Laboratory Animal Medical Services (LAMS)

The Laboratory Animal Medical Services (LAMS) is part of the Office of Research at the University of Cincinnati. They are responsible for husbandry and veterinary care of all vertebrate animals on the University of Cincinnati (UC) campuses. LAMS is committed to providing high-quality services to meet the needs of the researchers. In addition, LAMS assists researchers in model development, animal usage, humane animal treatment, and compliance with University policies and procedures and governmental regulations.

Job Overview

The LAMS department is hiring a Clinical Veterinarian to join their highly motivated and talented team. This position will provide high quality health care and surgical oversight for laboratory animals and provide training for technicians and research staff. They will also provide oversight of USDA covered species, including guidance to veterinary technical staff for surgical procedures and peri-operative care.

Essential Functions
  • Provide medical guidance to veterinary technical staff for rodent health cases and for care of USDA covered species. Assist with pre-anesthesia, anesthesia, and anesthetic selection and maintenance of large and small animal species and provide species‑specific anesthesia and analgesia.
  • Support the Director by providing didactic and hands‑on training for LAMS technical staff, veterinary technicians, and research staff members. Guide the LAMS training staff to advance training programs, including orientation for new faculty.
  • Provide support for regulatory compliance and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) activities. Assist with IACUC duties, performing veterinary pre‑review of protocol amendments and veterinary verification and consultation (VVC).
  • Assist with review of SOPs, Guidelines, and Quality Assurance Standards. Assist with strategic planning initiatives.
  • Report animal, facility and personnel issues and concerns to the appropriate level.
  • Participate in the veterinary on‑call rotation.
  • Perform related duties based on departmental need. This job description can be changed at any time.
Required Education

Doctoral Degree in Veterinary Medicine (graduated from an AVMA Council on Education (COE)-accredited school or successfully completed an educational equivalency certification program such as that administered by the AVMA's Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates (ECFVG)).

Required Trainings/Certifications
  • Current license to practice veterinary medicine in at least one state is required with the requirement to obtain an Ohio license within one (1) year.
  • Ability to obtain DEA license within one (1) year.
  • Board eligibility by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) within three (3) years.
Required Experience
  • Two (2) years of experience in Laboratory Animal Medicine.
  • Knowledge of pertinent laws, regulations, and policies that govern the use of animals in research.
  • Ability to enter animal vivarium, including animal biosafety level two, rodent barrier housing, and chemical housing areas.
Additional Qualifications Considered
  • ACLAM Diplomate.
  • USDA Accredited.
  • Experience working in an academic research environment.
  • Experience managing genetically engineered mouse models.
  • Experience working with rabbits and swine.
