The EKG Tech is responsible for performing electrocardiograms (EKG's) on adult and neonatal patients, preparing patients, performing treadmill stress testing (including patient preparations), operating treadmill equipment, hooking up and discontinuing Holter cardiac monitoring. The Stress Test Technician is a healthcare professional who specializes in the assessment and management of cardiac stress exercise testing. Stress Test Technicians use various methods to evaluate an individual's cardiovascular fitness, including exercise electrocardiography (ECG), echocardiography, and blood pressure monitoring.
They collaborate with other healthcare professionals, such as cardiologists, nurses, and echo techs, to provide comprehensive care. They must also have excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively educate and motivate patients to perform high-quality exercise testing.
- Perform electrocardiograms (EKG's) on adult and neonatal patients.
- Prepare patients and perform treadmill stress testing, including patient preparations.
- Operate treadmill equipment.
- Hookup and discontinue Holter cardiac monitoring.
- Collaborate with other healthcare professionals including cardiologists, nurses, and echo techs to provide comprehensive cardiac care.
- Communicate with patients, effectively educating and motivating them to perform high-quality exercise testing.
- Prepare patients and assist cardiologist in performing cardiac stress testing.
- Evaluate patient condition before, during, and after cardiac stress testing and alert cardiologist as appropriate.
- Apply Holter monitors and handle transmission of Holter monitors to and from the central site.
- Assist with report processing.
- Perform EKG testing as needed by the department/facility.
- Assist in scheduling, pre-certification, corporate compliance, charge capture, and denial management of cardiac stress tests and Holter monitor procedures.
- Perform EKGs as needed by the department.
- Communicate with Pharmacy regarding cardiac medications and radiopharmaceuticals as prescribed by the cardiologist.
- Prepare patients for cardiac stress testing by obtaining patient history and documenting contraindications, instructing patients, and demonstrating stressing techniques, applying electrodes, obtaining IV access, acquiring resting BP and baseline EKG.
- Coordinate cardiac stress testing with cardiologist, Nuclear Medicine and Echocardiology as needed.
- Apply Holter monitors and provide patient instruction.
- Transmit and receive Holter monitor tracings from the central site.
- Assist in EKG report processing as needed by the departments or facility.
- Prepare cardiac stress tests, Holter monitor, and EKG tracings for interpretation.
- Distribute accurate and timely reports of cardiac stress testing, Holter monitors, and EKGs.
- Maintain accurate departmental records and files for cardiac stress testing, Holter monitors, and EKGs.
- Participate and assist in the departmental Performance Improvement Plan.
- Attend departmental and QA meetings as required by management.
- Maintain safety and infection control measures.
- Report incidents to Manager, Risk Management, Security, and/or Radiation Safety Officer in a timely manner.
- Serve as a preceptor to new employees and/or trainees.
- Maintain clinical competencies and credentialing.
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Demonstrates knowledge of cardiac dysrhythmia and cardiac stress testing protocols and the ability to recognize abnormal cardiac rhythms.
- Demonstrates skills in IV Therapy Management (offered by MHP).
- Demonstrates knowledge of radiopharmaceuticals and/or cardiac medications.
- Current BLS certification and ability to alert physician as to high-risk situations and respond to emergent situations appropriately.
- Computer skills.
