The EKG Tech is responsible for performing electrocardiograms (EKG’s) on adult and neonatal patients, preparing patients and performing treadmill stress testing (including patient preparations), operating treadmill equipment, and hooking up and discontinuing Holter cardiac monitoring. The Stress Test Technician is a healthcare professional who specializes in the assessment and management of cardiac stress exercise testing. They use a variety of methods to evaluate an individual's cardiovascular fitness, including exercise electrocardiography (ECG), echocardiography, and blood pressure monitoring.
They play a vital role in preventing and managing cardiovascular disease, the leading cause of death worldwide. The Stress Test Tech collaborates with other healthcare professionals, such as cardiologists, nurses, and echo techs, to provide comprehensive care for their patients. They must also have excellent communication and interpersonal skills to effectively educate and motivate patients to perform high‑quality exercise testing.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Prepares patients and assists cardiologist in performing cardiac stress testing.
- Evaluates patient condition before, during and after cardiac stress testing and alerts cardiologist as appropriate.
- Applies Holter monitors and is responsible for their transmission to and from the central site, and assists with report processing.
- Performs EKG testing as needed by the department/facility.
- Assists in scheduling, pre‑certification, corporate compliance, charge capture, and denial management of cardiac stress tests and Holter monitor procedures.
- Communicates with Pharmacy regarding cardiac medications and radiopharmaceuticals as prescribed by the cardiologist.
- Obtains patient history, documents contraindications, instructs patient, demonstrates stressing techniques, applies electrodes, obtains IV access, acquires resting BP and baseline EKG.
- Coordinates cardiac stress testing with cardiologist, Nuclear Medicine and Echocardiology as needed.
- Transmits and receives Holter monitor tracings from central site.
- Assists in EKG report processing as needed.
- Prepares cardiac stress tests, Holter monitor, and EKG tracings for interpretation and distributes accurate and timely reports.
- Maintains accurate departmental records and files for cardiac stress testing, Holter monitors and EKGs.
- Participates and assists in the departmental Performance Improvement Plan; attends departmental and QA meetings as required by management.
- Maintains safety and infection control measures; reports incidents to Manager, Risk Management, Security, and/or Radiation Safety Officer in a timely manner.
- Serves as a preceptor to new employees and/or trainees.
- Maintains clinical competencies and credentialing.
Applicant must have one of the following:
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Demonstrates knowledge of Cardiac Dysrhythmia and cardiac stress testing protocols and the ability to recognize abnormal cardiac rhythms.
- Demonstrates skills in IV Therapy Management (offered by MHP).
- Demonstrates knowledge of radiopharmaceuticals and/or cardiac medications.
- Current BLS certification and ability to alert physician as to high risk situations and respond to emergent situations appropriately.
- Computer skills.
