Position: Postdoctoral Research Fellow - Circadian and Sensory Integration (Fernandez)

Overview

Research Fellow - Circadian and Sensory Integration. The Fernandez Lab at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital is seeking a postdoctoral fellow to contribute to neuroscience research focused on the mechanisms underlying light perception, development, and brain plasticity.

Responsibilities
  • Develop the skills and knowledge to become an independent scientist, including critical thinking and data analysis, devising specific aims, long-term project planning, and experimental design.
  • Design, execute, and record laboratory experiments and analyze data, with potential impact on decisions regarding future patient care.
  • Research and improve current methods; evaluate innovative techniques; ensure protocol and assay accuracy through regular quality and reproducibility checks; implement improvements within the Division/Department; troubleshoot and correct erroneous results or equipment problems.
  • Discuss insights about experimental results with Faculty and provide useful recommendations and analyses.
  • Present research at laboratory meetings, journal clubs, seminars, and meetings; develop skills to critically review and discuss data.
  • Draft, write, and edit scientific reports, papers, journal articles, abstracts, and grants.
  • Progressively increase responsibilities with mentorship of research staff and fiscal administration.
  • Maintain currency in the field through continuing education, literature, and seminars; actively participate in discussions with PI, faculty, trainees, and staff; seek feedback on career trajectory from PI and mentoring committees.
  • Attend required Cincinnati Children’s training sessions and ensure regulatory compliance with institutional policies and procedures (e.g., Infection Control, ORCRA).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • PhD/MD or equivalent
  • Strong background in neuroscience or a related field
  • Enthusiasm for taking on new projects
  • Doctoral degree in a relevant field
  • Experience with tracing neuronal circuits, techniques for measuring neuronal activity (such as fiber photometry, EEG, and optogenetics), knowledge of genetic mouse lines, and behavioral tests for circadian, sleep, cognitive, and affective responses in rodents
