This opportunity offers clinical experience and exposure under the guidance of a Registered Nurse or designated healthcare professional.

Summary Of Primary Function

The Clinical Nursing Student during the summer provides direct patient care under RN guidance in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations. This temporary, time‑limited program is primarily a job‑shadowing role that may include aspects of clinical care delegated by the RN.

Essential Job Functions
  • Supports the RN in the application of the nursing process.
  • Develops critical thinking skills through collaboration with the RN to ensure quality patient care delivery.
  • Seeks out educational opportunities related to nursing practice and critical thinking.
  • Shadows the RN to learn the role within the care team and understand the nursing process.
  • Provides basic patient care, including care and comfort, vital sign monitoring, personal hygiene, and mobility, in accordance with facility and state board standards.
  • Acts as liaison between patient and RN, reporting any changes or concerns.
  • Provides high‑level customer service to patients, families, visitors and staff.
  • Documents accurately, precisely, and timely when applicable.
  • Participates in hand‑off/report of pertinent information during patient transfer.
  • Performs delegated tasks once competency is validated.
  • Communicates clearly with all healthcare team members.
  • Follows directions of the healthcare team.
  • Applies knowledge of patient and healthcare safety standards and regulations.
  • Practices infection prevention and transmission‑based precautions.
  • Collaborates effectively within team dynamics.
  • Collects and documents patient data, including vital signs, intake/output, and changes in condition.
  • Assists with basic hygiene and activities of daily living.
  • Supports feeding, hydration, nutrition, and elimination.
  • Assists with ambulation and patient mobility.
  • Uses clinical technology appropriately.
  • Approaches care in a compassionate, relationship‑based manner.
  • Ensures accountability for completion of assigned tasks.
  • Escalates concerns following the chain of command.
  • Demonstrates professionalism.
Education

High school diploma or GED (required).

Currently enrolled in an RN nursing program and has completed program‑specific educational requirements with a planned graduation date within 12 months of the summer program start (required).

Certifications
  • BLS (preferred).
Work Experience

Recent experience in acute care and/or long‑term care facility (preferred).

Training

Qualifications may vary per facility; please refer to program‑specific requirements. EPIC Electronic Health Record (EHR) training is preferred.

Working Conditions
  • Periods of high stress and fluctuating workloads.
  • Potential exposure to physical altercations and verbal abuse.
  • May be required to use physical restraints.
  • Exposure to adverse weather conditions (cold, hot, dust, wind).
  • Exposure to high noise levels and bright lights.
  • Exposure to hazardous substances or body fluids.
  • Human blood and other potentially infectious materials.
  • Constant interruptions and long periods of working alone.
  • General office environment.
  • Required travel to off‑site locations, occasionally in adverse weather; long‑distance or air travel not to exceed 10%.
Patient Population

The student must demonstrate knowledge and skills appropriate to the age of the patients served, including understanding growth and development across the lifespan and assessing data reflective of patient status to deliver appropriate care.
