MRI Technologist
To operate MRI scanners, obtaining diagnostic images of specified body parts as requested. The technologist must produce quality images for radiologist interpretation and be capable of functioning independently with minimal supervision.
Responsibilities- Greets patient by introducing self and asking the patient to verify their name and birthdate.
- Takes pertinent patient history. Reviews order for procedure and any additional documentation, current medications, allergy information, and completed questionnaire.
- Explains the procedure to the patient and solicits questions to ensure understanding.
- Proactively anticipates patient needs, keeps patient and family informed of delays, answers questions, and follows up on concerns or contacts others as needed.
- Communicates with all patients, coworkers, physicians, and office staff in a professional manner respecting differences.
- Prepares patient for MRI scans by explaining the procedure, screening for indwelling materials affected by magnetic fields, taking patient history, and starting IV for contrast media when necessary.
- Positions patient, performs scans, and archives procedures according to established protocols, producing diagnostic images within quality-control parameters.
- Is knowledgeable about coils, gating devices, and other equipment necessary for proper completion; possesses working knowledge of MRI computers, including startup and shutdown; handles equipment and patient safety situations and emergencies.
- Utilizes proper venipuncture techniques to prepare patient for contrast media administration; administers contrast media per protocol or physician direction; labels syringes appropriately per policy.
- Identifies, prepares, administers, and documents various medications used during procedures.
- Reconciles patient medications to ensure they do not interact with contrast media.
- Completes all work in a timely, efficient, and productive manner.
- Assists coworkers in other modalities as appropriate, starting IVs, completing computer functions, and preparing patients.
- Verifies MD orders for accuracy and acts upon them appropriately.
- Properly screens patients and others before entering the scan room to reduce injury risk.
- Instructs patients and all personnel on risks associated with the MRI unit.
- Wears and stores dosimeter appropriately; switches it quarterly and in a timely manner as applicable.
- Uses appropriate devices to move patients, protecting both patient and self.
- Observes patients and assists as necessary to minimize risk of falls or other injury.
- Adheres to national patient safety goals, including hand washing, proper patient identification, labeling, and medication administration.
- Understands and can execute policies and procedures during medical emergencies, fire, tornadoes, and other emergency situations.
- Verifies all images are matched and linked in PACS.
- Verifies completion of all documents, questionnaires, and histories pertinent to the MRI study.
- Maintains a working knowledge of all information systems (HIS, RIS, PACS), scans documents, enters data correctly, tracks charges, and manages data in a timely manner.
- Knows the process for burning images to a CD.
- Attends 75% of all departmental and technical meetings, participates in in-services, and reviews memos, emails, and bulletins to stay current.
- Accommodates patients’ scheduling needs, optimizes personnel and equipment use while maintaining quality, works cooperatively with staff in all modalities, assists reception staff, and is willing to become multi‑modality trained.
- Keeps rooms stocked and equipment cleaned per department standards.
- Reports equipment problems to manager and keeps coworkers informed of status; uses safety techniques and maintains equipment; proactively identifies issues and resolves them promptly.
- Adheres to time and attendance policy and discusses schedule variations with manager.
- Maintains active credentials (ODH and ARRT) and submits them per Imaging Services requirements.
- Willingly assists in departmental changes to improve workflow and learns new functions and duties as needed to keep the department viable.
