Planning Engineer
Location:
Chepstow, with hybrid working across Wales and South West.
Salary: £55,000-£65,000 (negotiable based on experience) plus car allowance, bonus and a comprehensive benefits package.
Our Client is a fast‑growing mechanical and civil organisation delivering construction and infrastructure services to highly regulated oil, gas, water, and power generation sectors. They manufacture high‑pressure pipe systems, install them and carry out all associated civil, mechanical and electrical works. Several frameworks exist with Gas Distribution Networks, and they contract directly with oil organisations, ports and private networks.
Over the past 18 months the firm’s project volume and complexity has expanded significantly, and further growth is planned.
The Role:
All project and resource planning has previously been performed by project managers. To meet increased workload, the company seeks a talented planning engineer to centralise and improve planning capacity, capability, quality and control. The successful candidate will have scope to grow with the business and could shape and lead the planning department in the future.
Responsibilities:
- Support 5‑10 small and medium‑sized construction projects (≈£100k‑£1.5m each) by controlling project plans, providing weekly progress updates, capturing and reporting changes in line with contractual obligations.
- Assist the broader delivery and resource schedule and provide technical planning support to the tendering team.
- Work with project teams to integrate time and cost considerations.
- Support and ensure month‑end reporting is completed by project teams.
- Promote the development and coordination of project‑level schedules, ensuring alignment and integration.
- Apply critical‑path analysis and minimise organisational risk by identifying critical paths for contracts.
- Produce progress reports showing variance against baselines.
- Enable Project Management to control contract progress by producing integrated programmes, monitoring performance and identifying problems.
- Control procurement progress by producing schedules for all materials and equipment, updating regularly and analysing implications of updates.
Experience &
Qualifications:
- Extensive planning experience, ideally in the oil or gas sectors; experience in civil, general engineering or construction is also considered.
- Strong technical/engineering knowledge and sound understanding of planning skills and programming.
- Proficient in Primavera P6.
- Clear understanding of contractual elements linked to a programme and experience with claim situations.
- Preferable qualification in a construction or engineering discipline.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work closely with project delivery teams.
- Working knowledge of CDM and construction health & safety.
