Overview
JOB SUMMARY: The Staff R+D Systems Engineer will be part of a team developing new products for the medical diagnostics market. In this role, the Staff Systems Engineer serves as the System Architect for Diagnostic products, guiding end-to-end solution architecture across software, hardware, mechanical, and design/UX. The Staff Systems Engineer will oversee system architecture across multiple complex projects, working with project systems engineers to ensure that a methodical approach is utilized to translate needs into a sustainable system architecture, define interfaces and architectural budgets, and drive cross-domain technical alignment.
This role will work closely with the teams implementing the architecture into a technical solution, making sure that architectural trade-offs and issues are properly analyzed and resolved.
- Defines and maintains system architecture for complex diagnostic products, including structure, key behaviors, interface concepts, allocation boundaries, and architectural budgets (performance, safety, reliability, cost, etc.).
- Leads cross-domain trade studies and documents architecture decisions. Chairs an architecture review forum to drive timely alignment, closure, and decision rationale capture.
- Defines and governs system and subsystem interfaces; identifies architectural gaps and drives resolution among a diverse group of project stakeholders.
- Provides system-level technical integration intent (how subsystems fit together and what must be true at interfaces) and ensures cross-domain implementation choices remain consistent with the intended architecture.
- Works cross-functionally and collaboratively with project systems engineers to translate customer and business needs into clear system requirements and guides allocation to subsystem requirements.
- Reviews, helps develop, and approves architectural content expressed in MBSE models and associated architecture documentation, ensuring consistency across views and decision records.
- Partners with Diagnostics leadership to research and recommend forward-looking architecture options (technology roadmaps, platform strategy, make/buy, and key technical bets) to support the diagnostics business unit roadmap.
- Collaborates with senior leadership to drive alignment between technical decisions and business objectives. Communicates technical vision to executives and external partners as needed.
- Mentors systems engineers in best practices regarding system architecting and model-based approaches. Helps establish reusable architecture patterns and guardrails for future diagnostic projects, including collaborating with cyber-security engineering to ensure that security is designed into product architectures.
- Presents risk assessments and potential impacts to executives, enhances risk management processes.
- Provides expertise in shaping IP strategies aligned with organizational goals. Drives the creation of significant and impactful IP.
- Reviews the critical analyses of multiple project teams as an independent assessment. Exercises balanced judgement in determining which parts of an analysis requires deeper review.
Bachelor's degree and 10+ years of experience within the medical device or other highly regulated industries, or equivalent combination of both. Master’s degree preferred. INCOSE CSEP certification or ability to obtain certification within 2 years of employment. OMG SysML Model Builder Advanced certification preferred. Familiarity with embedded software and real-time system constraints is strongly preferred.
COMPETENCY and/or SKILL- Ability to act as an expert problem solver across technology platforms and engineering disciplines.
- Ability to serve as a technical leader on a platform team or program, influencing effectively in a matrixed environment.
- Ability to operate at multiple levels of abstraction, from broader solution and platform architecture down to subsystem-level interfaces and constraints.
- Ability to use strategic planning skills to set clear objectives and priorities aligned to business outcomes.
- Familiarity with embedded software architecture, integration considerations, and constraints is strongly preferred but not required.
- Mentors Engineer III and Sr. Engineer teammates, focusing on leadership skills, cultural competencies, and strategic thinking.
- May have a limited number of direct reports.
