GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Under general supervision, the Traffic-Engineering Technician may perform entry to intermediate level office and/or field technical duties in support of a variety of Transportation Engineering office and/or field business units. Depending upon individual skills and organizational needs, individual employees may assist in planning, design, Computer Aided Drafting/Design (CADD), Geographic Information Systems (GIS, construction management, studies, computations, land surveying, land record management, asset management, grant coordination, or field operations.

QUALIFICATIONS

Completion of secondary education or equivalent (high school diploma or GED) plus post-secondary education and/or training in Civil Engineering Technology, Engineering, or related field; or any equivalent combination of education, experience, and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

LICENSURE OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

Must possess a valid state of residency driver's license. Must remain insurable under the County's vehicle insurance policy.

JOB DESCRIPTION AND WORKER CHARACTERISTICS:

REPRESENTATIVE FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

* Collect, analyze, and maintain traffic data including traffic volumes, speeds, crash records, and roadway inventory information.

* Assist in conducting traffic engineering studies and evaluations in accordance with OMUTCD, ODOT, and FHWA standards.

* Perform, evaluate, document, with the placement and maintenance of traffic control devices, including signs, pavement markings, and related safety features.

* Perform traffic sign and pavement marking retro reflectivity inspections and maintain required compliance records.

* Conduct field inspections and site investigations in response to safety concerns, citizen requests, and service inquiries.

* Assist with the review of development plans, driveway permits, and temporary traffic control plans.

* Prepare technical reports, field notes, recommendations, and correspondence supporting engineering decisions.

* Operate traffic data collection equipment such as traffic counters, radar units, speed trailers, and retroreflectometers.

* Maintain traffic engineering databases, asset inventories, and GIS-related information.

* Coordinate with office staff, contractors, utilities, and other agencies on traffic-related matters.

* Respond to inquiries from the public and elected officials in a professional and technical manner.

* Assist engineers with traffic safety studies, roadway evaluations, and capital improvement projects.

* Perform related duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

* Knowledge of traffic engineering principles, traffic control devices, and applicable standards and manuals.

* Ability to collect, interpret, and document technical traffic data.

* Ability to perform field work in and around active roadways.

* Effective written and verbal communication skills.

* Proficiency with standard office software, AutoCAD, Flexi 22, and specialized traffic engineering tools.
