The Dan Beard Council serves Scouts in the Greater Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky areas, impacting over 30,000 young people annually. As a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization, it is dedicated to helping youth develop ethical and moral character through the values of the Scout Oath and Law.
Role DescriptionThe Program Director must be at least 21 years of age and currently trained or willing to attend a training from National Camping School in Camp Administration. They will live on site and serve only in a program function with no other duties assigned. They should have the ability to get along with others, delegate, and coordinate authority, and have a good knowledge of all phases of good camp program.
Must be a member, or willing to become a member, of Scouting America. Recommended to have a Scouting Background.
- Ability to plan and carry out a high-quality program that meets or exceeds the National Standards.
- Ability to observe staff and camper behavior, assess it for appropriateness, enforce safety regulations, carry out emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior management techniques.
- Ability to respond to critical incidents.
- Ability to communicate plans and needs to the Camp Director on a timely basis.
- Must be a role model for all staff members and campers. This includes, but is not limited to, following the Scout Oath, Law, Motto, and Slogan, wearing proper uniform, and carrying out the mission and policies of the Dan Beard Council and Scouting America.
- Responsible for organizing and implementing merit badge sessions, open and evening programming.
- Oversee the training and use of the Merit Badge Tracking System by Staff.
- Coordinates scheduling to eliminate conflict among Program Staff.
- Provides Leadership and Coaching, as needed, for the program staff, program areas, and lesson plans. Encourages and supports their operation and formally evaluates each staff member.
- With the Camp Director, will help conduct pre-camp and on-going training for the program staff.
- Coordinates and/or plans the Opening Campfire using the talents of the staff.
- Coordinates and/or plans the Closing Campfire using the talents of the staff and campers.
- With the Camp Director, conduct staff meetings.
- Oversees the daily flags, mealtimes, and messages.
- Attend or give updates to the Commissioner for the Daily Leader Meeting.
- Oversees the opening and closing inventories of each program area.
- Provides basis for improving next year’s program through a written report with recommendations at the end of the season.
- Arrange for necessary equipment and supplies.
- Recruit, Interview, and Train a capable staff to fill the camp’s program needs.
- Help to promote the Camp Friedlander camping programs.
- Work to see that Camp Friedlander operates within the budget.
