Role Summary

Paraprofessional (Special Needs/1:1/Units) reports to the building principal and provides day‑to‑day support to students. Under the direct supervision of a certified staff member, assists certified professional staff with classroom instruction, freeing them from non‑professional duties.

Qualifications Profile

Any combination of education and experience that provides the required skill and knowledge for successful performance would qualify.

  • Associate's Degree or higher, or high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Passing of the Parapro Assessment examination as required by the No Child Left Behind Act.
  • Prior experience working with children desirable.
  • Must be able to obtain and maintain an Educational Aide Permit issued by the State of Ohio.
Responsibilities
  • Communicate effectively, problem solve, and work independently.
  • Assist and guide students to reinforce reading, language arts, mathematics, computer instruction, and other skills.
  • Work with students individually and in small groups to reinforce basic learning and implement assigned programs.
  • Assist professional staff in the administration and correction of classroom exercises, tests, and assessments.
  • Assist in classroom preparation and strategies for reinforcing instructional materials and skills according to individual student needs.
  • Assist with record‑keeping procedures to document student learning and performance.
  • Assist with classroom behavioral management to minimize disruptions, ensure a safe and orderly classroom, and keep students on task.
  • Assist students in non‑instructional areas, such as supervising lunch programs, bus duty, playground duty, corridor, study hall, and other related areas.
  • Accompany students on field trips for supervision.
  • Construct, copy, distribute, and use educational materials as needed.
  • Follow all applicable safety rules, procedures, and regulations for assisting students with disabilities or other special needs.
  • Assist guidance, pupil services staff or building administration as needed.
  • Perform any other related duties as assigned.

  • Use personal computer applications such as Word and Excel.
  • Work with a diverse group of individuals.
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding students, employees, and others.
  • Establish supportive and compassionate relationships with students with special needs.
  • Build cooperative working relationships with students, staff, and others.
  • Report work orally or in writing to supervisor as required.
  • Effective writing and verbal communication skills.
Physical and Mental Demands
  • Work in standard office and school building environments.
  • Work outdoors during outdoor student activities.
Employment Provisions

Salary: $21.00 per hour – per AFSCME contract
Service Period: School year only – 7 hours daily
