Position SummaryThe Monitor Mentor engages with youth and adults at the branch locations to maintain an environment conducive to library use and enjoyment, emphasizing positive interactions.
Hours20 hours per week, generally after‑school hours from 2–6 p.m. Monday through Friday, with some flexibility.
EssentialJob Duties and Responsibilities
- Builds rapport and relationships with youth and adults in the branch to promote a safe environment and engagement with library resources.
- Assists other staff in supporting positive youth engagement in the branch, including executing age‑appropriate programming under the direction of a librarian.
- Defuses and mediates confrontations, reduces tensions, and promotes peaceful library use through restorative practices.
- Establishes and maintains collaborative relationships with neighborhood stakeholders, including law enforcement, school resource departments, and community organizations, and shares information about youth behavior as appropriate with designated neighborhood partners.
- Supports and enforces the Library’s customer policies and procedures, including the Standards of Library Behavior; alerts Public Safety staff and location leadership about concerning behavior.
- Assists library customers with basic information regarding library rules, policies, organization, locations, services, and facilities.
- Supports and advances the Library’s mission of connecting people with the world of ideas and information.
- Embraces and embodies the Library’s core beliefs, strategic priorities and pillars of excellence.
- Demonstrates a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion efforts of all colleagues and customers regardless of age, cultural background, ability, ethnicity, family status, gender identity, immigration status, national origin, race, religion, sex, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, and veteran status.
- Complies with Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library's workplace expectations, attendance and punctuality, drug‑free workplace, harassment in the workplace, and other employment‑related policies and procedures; and all other rules, guidelines, requirements, standards, and practices that are applicable to the position.

- Ability to interpret and enforce patron policies to promote a safe and welcoming customer environment.
- Ability to work independently and with coworkers in a wide variety of situations with minimal supervision.
- Ability to use all technology applicable to the essential functions of the job and commonly used by the Library.
- Lifting objects less than 25 pounds and carrying them short distances (50 feet or less) is required; pushing carts of library materials up to 150 pounds is required.
- Working irregular hours, including evenings and weekends, is required.
- Education:
High School diploma or equivalent is required. - Certifications or licensure:
None. - Years of relevant experience:
None. Experience in youth or adult education or social work is preferred. - Years of experience supervising:
None.
