Housing Support Worker (Night Shift) We are seeking a compassionate, proactive, and dedicated individual to join our team as a Housing Support Worker on the night shift. At YMCA North Tyneside, you won’t just be managing a building; you’ll be a vital guide for young people as they take their first steps towards independent, positive living
.

Purpose of the Role

This role is all about empowerment
. You will provide essential housing support to young people, with a specific focus on developing crucial independent living skills (often called ‘life skills’). Your commitment will enable young people to make positive, lasting changes that secure their future housing success and well‑being.

Key Responsibilities

As our Night Shift Housing Support Worker, you will be a reassuring presence and an invaluable part of the team, working to ensure a safe, supportive and structured environment.

Supporting Young People & Building Relationships
  • Build and maintain strong, supportive relationships with young people, always upholding professional boundaries.
  • Work with a compassionate and non‑judgemental attitude
    , understanding that many young people face complex needs and personal obstacles
    .
  • Employ a friendly, approachable, and anti‑oppressive manner in all interactions.
  • Motivate and encourage young people to engage, succeed and overcome barriers, helping them to achieve their personal goals
    .
  • Support young people in understanding and abiding by House Rules
    , always viewing eviction as a very last resort
    .
Safety, Security and Professionalism
  • Work closely with the Senior Housing Support Worker to ensure the effective security of the building and that appropriate support is available overnight.
  • Ensure Safeguarding procedures are followed effectively and efficiently, acting as a critical link in keeping young people safe.
  • Monitor and manage visitors in line with our Visitor Policy, ensuring a secure environment for all residents.
  • Support young people to stay safe overnight
    , seeking advice and guidance from Out of Hours Teams (e.g., Children and Adult Services, Mental Health Services) and emergency services as required.
Operational and Administrative Duties
  • Prepare accommodation units efficiently for new residents (
    void preparation
    ).
  • Carry out essential night cleaning duties as part of the evening task list, maintaining a clean and positive environment.
  • Accurately monitor and manage any rent, service charges and other cash payments
    .
  • Use IT systems effectively, communicating via email and logging support, interactions and evening events using our computer‑based recording system (Inform).
  • Maintain professional and effective communication with management and relevant external agencies (Statutory, Community and Voluntary).
  • Abide by all YMCA policies and procedures (including Health and Safety, Fire Safety, Lone Working, Recording and Professional Boundaries).
  • Bring a positive, ‘can‑do’ attitude and strong initiative
    , completing necessary tasks (including outstanding actions from the day team) without always needing specific instruction.
