Overview
To perform responsible skilled mechanical diagnostic and repair work on a wide variety of automobiles, trucks, heavy equipment, specialized fire apparatus and related equipment, parks equipment and portable equipment; and perform related work as assigned.
- Equipment Mechanic: $5,695.17 - $6,922.50 Monthly
- With Fire Mechanic Certification I: $5,809.07 - $7,060.95 Monthly (includes 2% premium)
- With Fire Mechanic Certification II: $5,979.91 - $7,268.63 Monthly (includes 5% premium)

Newly-hired employees in this position may receive up to $5,000 relocation allowance for expenses incurred for the relocation of the employee and their immediate family to San Diego County. Additionally, this position is eligible for the Employee Referral Program. Eligible employees that make a successful referral will receive either 16 hours of leave or a referral payment of up to $3,000.
EssentialFunctions
Functions may include, but are not limited to, the following: diagnose, overhaul, repair and maintain a wide variety of trucks and heavy equipment and their component systems and computerized automotive systems, fire apparatus, including pumps, aerial ladders, and emergency equipment; prepare and maintain a preventive maintenance schedule for fire apparatus equipment and vehicles; troubleshoot and diagnose operating problems; remove, overhaul, repair, replace and test assigned equipment;
overhaul, repair, maintain and adjust engines, transmissions, clutches, differentials, carburetors, generators and pumps, fire vehicles, equipment engines, gear boxes, valves and their components, fuel, electrical, hydraulic and power transmission systems; fit and adjust bearings; install axles; fit pistons and ring; straighten and align frames; weld, install and recondition electrical systems, spark plugs, distributors, condensers, points and rotors; test, reline and adjust brakes;
operate fire and motor equipment in connection with repair and servicing and in performing and testing assigned work; use and maintain a complete set of hand, power and shop tools and test equipment related to the work; estimate parts and materials required for the work; requisition or order replacement parts as necessary; recommend contract work as required; observe safe work methods and utilize safety equipment related to the work;
read and interpret schematics, shop manuals, blueprints and plans in performing work assignments; provide technical assistance to other employees in performing work assignment; prepare and maintain a variety of logs, records and reports of work performed; complete forms as necessary; make oral reports as necessary; keep work related records using a computer; respond to emergency situations as required; perform fieldwork as assigned;
assist in the development of specifications for new equipment; recommend modification and repairs to existing equipment; stay abreast of current technology in the mechanical field; operate City and fire vehicles and equipment skillfully and safely; respond to questions or complaints from the public; build and maintain positive working relationships with co-workers, other City employees and the public using principles of good customer service;
and perform other related duties as assigned.
Experience
:
Two years of responsible experience in the maintenance and repair of light, medium and heavy diesel and gasoline powered vehicles and equipment, or fire apparatus equipment.
Training
:
Completion of the twelfth grade supplemented by additional training in mechanical repair or specialized training in fire apparatus equipment or a related field.
License or Certificate
