Job DescriptionJOB TITLE: SECONDARY CLASSROOM TEACHER
SALARY LEVEL: NEGOTIATED SALARY SCHEDULE
DEPARTMENT: INSTRUCTION

EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree (B.S. or B.A.) from a four‑year college or university;
Secondary teaching certificate. Must meet state requirements to be considered a “Highly Qualified” teacher.
LANGUAGE
SKILLS:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents; respond effectively to sensitive inquiries; write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style; give effective and persuasive presentations on complex topics.
MATHEMATICAL
SKILLS:
Ability to calculate figures such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumferences, and volume; apply basic algebra and geometry.
REASONING ABILITY: Apply common sense to follow written, oral, or diagram instructions; handle problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Regularly talk or hear; stand and walk frequently; sit, use hands or fingers, handle objects or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl occasionally; lift or move up to 50 pounds. Vision requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Occasionally work in outside weather conditions or wet/humid conditions; exposure to extreme cold or heat; noise level usually moderate to loud.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES- Teaches in the curriculum area assigned, such as reading, language arts, social studies, mathematics, science, art, health, physical education, and music, to pupils in a classroom, utilizing the course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
- Instructs pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and administrative regulations and procedures of the school district.
- Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provides individualized and small‑group instruction to adapt the curriculum to each pupil’s needs.
- Translates lesson plans into learning experiences to best utilize available instructional time.
- Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the classroom.
- Evaluates pupils’ academic and social growth, keeps appropriate records, and prepares progress reports.
- Communicates with parents through conferences and other means to discuss pupil progress and interpret the school’s programs.
- Identifies pupil needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
- Creates an effective learning environment through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers.
- Maintains professional competence through in‑service educational activities provided by the district and self‑selected professional growth activities.
- Selects and requisitions books and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records.
- Supervises pupils in out‑of‑classroom activities during the assigned working day.
- Administers group standardized tests in accordance with district and state testing programs.
- Participates in curriculum development programs as required.
- Participates in faculty committees and the sponsorship of pupil activities.
- Develops and uses instructional material suitable for verbal or visual instruction of pupils with a wide range of mental, physical, and emotional maturities.
- Provides individual and group instruction designed to meet individual needs and help the pupils make a satisfactory transition to school.
- Completes all paperwork, district and state education forms, in a timely manner.
- Implements students’ individualized educational plans (IEP) by providing modifications and adaptations.
- Other duties that may be assigned by the administrator.
