Job Description

JOB TITLE: SECONDARY CLASSROOM TEACHER

SALARY LEVEL: NEGOTIATED SALARY SCHEDULE

DEPARTMENT: INSTRUCTION

REPORTS TO: SECONDARY PRINCIPAL

  • Education and/or

    Experience:

    Bachelor’s degree (B.S. or B.A.) from a four‑year college or university; secondary teaching certificate. Must meet state requirements to be considered a “Highly Qualified” teacher.
  • Language

    Skills:

    Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents; respond effectively to sensitive inquiries or complaints; write speeches and articles using innovative techniques or style; make persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
  • Mathematical

    Skills:

    Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumferences, and volume; apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Reasoning Ability: Apply common sense to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form; deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Teach in the curriculum area of certification such as reading, language arts, social studies, mathematics, science, art, health, physical education, and music to pupils, utilizing the course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.
  • Instruct pupils in citizenship and basic subject matter specified in state law and district administrative regulations.
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials and provide individualized and small‑group instruction to adapt the curriculum to each pupil’s needs.
  • Translate lesson plans into learning experiences to best utilize available instructional time.
  • Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere.
  • Evaluate pupils’ academic and social growth, keep records, and prepare progress reports.
  • Communicate with parents through conferences and other means to discuss pupil progress and interpret school programs.
  • Identify pupil needs and cooperate with other staff in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  • Create an effective learning environment through functional and attractive displays, bulletin boards, and interest centers.
