Position: Middle / High School Guidance Counselor

The Middle / High School Guidance Counselor supports the academic, personal, social, and vocational development of students in grades 7–12. The counselor works collaboratively with students, families, teachers, and administrators to help students grow intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually while preparing for future educational and career opportunities.

Grounded in the mission of Catholic education, the counselor promotes student well-being, responsible decision-making, and personal growth while supporting students in discerning their gifts and future paths.

Key Responsibilities Student Guidance & Support
  • Provide individual and small-group counseling to support students’ academic, social, and emotional development.
  • Assist students in identifying personal strengths, interests, and goals related to education and future careers.
  • Support students experiencing academic, behavioral, or personal challenges by developing appropriate support plans in collaboration with school staff and families.
  • Promote healthy decision-making, resilience, and positive peer relationships.
Academic Planning & College/Career Readiness
  • Guide students in course selection and academic planning to ensure progress toward graduation requirements.
  • Assist high school students with college and career exploration, including application processes, scholarship opportunities, and vocational pathways.
  • Support students in preparing for standardized testing, postsecondary planning, and career readiness.
  • Coordinate with teachers and administrators to monitor student progress and identify students needing additional academic support.
  • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress and planning.
  • Collaborate with teachers, administrators, and the Student Success Team to support student well-being and academic achievement.
  • Provide resources and referrals to families when additional support services may be needed.
  • Participate in faculty meetings, professional development, and school initiatives.
Student Records & Program Administration
  • Maintain accurate and confidential student records in accordance with school policies and legal requirements.
  • Coordinate and administer student assessments, transcripts, and documentation related to academic progress and graduation requirements.
  • Assist with scheduling processes and student course registration as needed.
Mission & Catholic Identity
  • Support the mission of McDonell Area Catholic Schools by promoting a culture of respect, compassion, and service.
  • Encourage students to reflect on their God-given talents and discern their vocation in life.
  • Participate in school prayer, liturgies, and faith-based activities.
Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in School Counseling or related field required.
  • Valid Wisconsin DPI School Counselor license (or ability to obtain licensure).
  • Experience working with middle or high school students preferred.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive situations with professionalism.
  • Practicing Catholic preferred, with a commitment to supporting the mission of Catholic education.
  • Ability to build trusting relationships with students and families.
  • Strong counseling, listening, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to guide students in academic planning and future career discernment.
  • High level of discretion, professionalism, and confidentiality.
  • Collaborative mindset and ability to work effectively with faculty and school leadership.
  • Ability to represent MACS with professionalism and dedication to its Catholic mission.
