Risk & Compliance Manager - Chippenham - £50,000+
Location: Chippenham (Flexible / Hybrid working available)
Type of Role: Permanent, Full-time (37.5 hours)
Salary: £50,000+ (dependent on experience)
A well established regional law firm is seeking an experienced Risk & Compliance Manager to step into a newly created and influential role supporting the firm's regulatory, operational and strategic compliance functions. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with strong legal office experience who is ready to take ownership of a broad, varied and highly trusted position.
The OpportunityReporting to the firm's Compliance Officer for Legal Practice (COLP) and supervising a Risk & Compliance Assistant, you will play a central role in safeguarding the firm by identifying, assessing and managing legal and regulatory risks. You will ensure the firm operates in full compliance with SRA regulations, internal policies and wider legal obligations.
This is a hands on role with significant exposure to partnership level work, policy development, regulatory liaison and firmwide compliance management.
Key Responsibilities- Partnership Support
- Attending Partnership, Strategy and Budget meetings, providing input and taking minutes
- Preparing confidential partnership correspondence, agendas, minutes and reports
- Risk & Compliance Management
- Liaising with COLP, COFA and MLRO on regulatory matters
- Working with the Regulatory Risk & Compliance Office (RACO) on drafting and reviewing policies
- Drafting and implementing firmwide policies, including HR and GDPR
- Delivering training on new and updated policies
- Maintaining and updating the Office Procedures Manual
- Coordinating annual assessments such as Lexcel and CQS
- Supervising internal file reviews and preparing quarterly/annual reports
- Managing compliance registers (Complaints, High Risk Matters, Declined Instructions, COLP/COFA notifications, GDPR breaches, SAR breaches)
- Ensuring DBS checks are completed and renewed in line with SRA/Law Society requirements
- Managing Subject Access Requests (SARs)
- Coordinating annual risk and compliance training
- Conducting annual reviews of all policies and procedures
- Ensuring renewal of the firm's ICO data protection fee
- Managing undertakings records and ensuring timely discharge
- Maintaining and updating Terms of Business and ensuring publication and communication
- Supporting practising certificate renewals and MySRA updates
- Managing the gifts and hospitality register
- Reviewing and updating the firm's Business Plan
- Participating in the Business Continuity team
- Working with IT to ensure new processes meet regulatory requirements
- Supporting Cyber Essentials renewal
- Liaising with Marketing to ensure regulatory compliance
- Supporting COFA and Accounts Director with aged client balances and debtors
- Assisting with mortgage panel applications and updates
- Managing electronic contracts and staff queries
- Supporting departmental projects and steering groups
- Supporting compliance aspects of mergers
- Assisting with renewal of professional indemnity insurance
- Insurance & Subscriptions
- Supporting renewal of Cyber Insurance and Management Liability Insurance
- Managing renewal of Ordnance Survey and Practical Law subscriptions
- Experience working in a legal office
- Strong knowledge of legal compliance and regulatory frameworks
- Understanding of SRA Rules & Regulations, LSAG (AML), Lexcel and CQS
- Excellent communication skills and confidence liaising with partners and staff
- Ability to prepare clear reports and deliver training
- Strong organisational skills and meticulous record keeping
- Good IT skills and confidence working with digital systems
- A proactive, structured and detail focused approach
