The Public Works Department provides a wide range of maintenance and facilities services including the management of crucial infrastructure and citywide systems such as streets, traffic signal and street light systems, landscape, water, sewer, waste, recycling, and storm drain systems. The Department also provides civil engineering services for land development and Capital Improvement Projects (CIP).
What You’ll DoAs our new Environmental Compliance Technician
, you will:
- Monitor, inspect, investigate, and ensure compliance with City and mandated environmental health and safety laws, rules, and regulations, and policies for Storm Water and Pretreatment Programs.
- Schedule and conduct field tests; collect samples and take readings or measurement of water and other materials.
- Respond to hazmat incidents and monitors cleanup.
- Clean and repair analytical and testing equipment.
- Prepare written inspection reports, noncompliance letters, enforcement action letters and reports; maintain inspection documentation and records as required in accordance with established City records management procedures.
We’re looking for someone who:
- Is knowledgeable in the principles and practices of water conservation and efficiency.
- Has the ability to conduct field tests, take readings and measurements, and collect samples of wastewater, storm water, groundwater, and other samples.
- Is excited by challenges, loves to learn, and thrives in a collaborative, fast‑paced environment.
Any combination of training and experience that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications would be:
- Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth (12th) grade, supplemented by college level coursework in chemistry, environmental science, or related field.
- Experience: Three (3) years of experience performing inspections, sampling, and compliance monitoring.

Certifications:- Possession of a valid California Class “C” Driver’s License, to be maintained throughout employment.
- Possession of, or successful acquisition within six months (6) months of appointment, a valid CWEA industrial Waste Inspector or Environmental Compliance Inspector I Certificate, to be maintained throughout employment.
- Mobility to work in a standard office setting and use standard office equipment, including a computer.
- Mobility to work in the field; strength and stamina to perform light to medium work.
- Operate a motor vehicle and visit various community sites.
- Vision to read printed materials and a computer screen.
- Hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone.
- The ability to lift, carry, push, and pull materials and objects averaging a weight of 20 pounds, or heavier weights, in all cases with the use of proper equipment and/or assistance from other staff.
